So all those women who took off will have to spend the day taking care of their kids because the schools are closed.

In my experience, most teachers don't have kids. Because very few people can truly put up with their shite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It's the whole reason why public school was created in the first place.

Can we please stop saying this. A teaching degree is one of the easiest to get that requires the least actual intelligence, most teachers start around $35k a year out of college for a 9 month job with good benefits usually. Theres many degrees that would absolutely love that. Most teachers that work over the summer can easily pull in between $40-50k and still have loads of time off. Furthermore, in 10 years with a masters you can easily make $50s most places, im honestly not sure what we think we should pay them? More than engineers?

The school system should have handled it just like any company with employees would. First requested up to certain limit, get the day off...If this seems unreasonable, give them the day off with no pay if it really is that important to them.

The education problem in this country starts and ends at home and the parenting.

But, "it takes a village"!!!

Hence, we as a nation are now a nation of village idiots with the population and idiocy rising. "Give us your poor, tired, hungry, and uneducated to join our under educated. United we something something something", should be a new plaque for the Statue of Liberty.

I wonder how many in a real profession like nursing could take off en masse with little warning.

In the Georgia school district that my parents worked in, you get a % of your highest annual salary as your retirement. You get that EVERY single year until you die. You also get the healthcare benefits to go along with it.

If you start teaching out of college (lets say 22), then you are eligible for the full retirement at 30 years, so you can retire at 52.

If you get on the track to become an administrator with a masters degree, you can get to 6 figures pretty quickly. Even more so if you go for the PhD. I think the retirement % was somewhere around 70%, so a middle school principal can retire at 52 and bring home 70k. If that person decides to get another job for the hell of it, then they can live a pretty damned good life at a relatively young age.

These numbers are based off of personal family experience. I can't speak for everyone.

My dad passed the 30 year mark and kept working as a principal while fighting cancer. When he died, the school district "retired" him and now my mom gets her teachers salary, my dad's 70% or whatever retirement off of a 6 figure salary, and she can do the 20 year retirement in a couple of years (which is a lower % than 70%, but still pretty good). So she will pull in 2 retirement checks, plus she will get my dad's social security at some point (but not her own; i believe it's one or the other).

TL;DR - if you play your cards right, you can live a very comfortable life and retire young by going the education route.

If I am the superintendent in that district I tell the teachers they can have a day this week to celebrate Women's Day.

But we are going to school the Monday of spring break.

Then give the teachers the choice.

They will not have to cancel school this week.

Oh and teacher retirement in Georgia is 60% of your annual salary. Many teachers work past 30 years because they can't afford to live on 60% of a teacher salary.

Not that this is a bad thing. I just know several teachers who stay more than 30 years.

Starting salary for a teacher in EBR is $44,500. If you teach summer school or coach a sport that easily becomes $50k for your first year.

So they basically had such a good time at the women's march that they wanted to do it again? What kind of awareness is this raising?

My coworker who lives in Alexandria has to take Wednesday off now because his wife is out of town and he has to watch their daughter.

His favorite restaurant by our office was also closed on the Day Without Immigrants, and we tried to take him there for his birthday.

He told me this morning he's thinking of becoming a Republican.

Good to see these women leading by example to their children where they can do the most good- at home.

Why come back to work?

I'd wager it's higher. I know teachers in NY that are north of $100k with a master's.
