at least the school district is providing before/after school programs as well as breakfast/lunch for any student that needs it.
They are doing all they can to mitigate the damage done by this so hats off to them.
The teachers are being incredibly selfish especially given how well they are paid in this region.
I live in Alexandria btw

I wonder how many in a real profession like nursing could take off en masse with little warning.
Happens daily, that's why there are locum tenens companies who contract day workers to cover them.
And nurses are the worst. Some patient comes in with the flu, then that flu patient is the gossip topic for the rest of the day. Within a week, half he nurses have called out "sick" bc they "caught the flu" from a sick patient. You don't see physicians doing this.

They also don't get paid full for the time they work. While they may receive pay checks year round, they only get paid for the days they teach. Teachers should get paid for the time they work, then when summers & vacations come around they shouldn't get paid. (Their annual pay for the days they work is split up so they don't get full pay every month, they get partial pay so they can get the rest of their partial pay during summers & holidays).
Pay them full salary for the time they work when they work and let the ones who want to make $ during off days get jobs to make $ during those times.
Imagine if you got paid only partial pay so they could spread your pay out to still give you pay checks when you aren't working.

So all those women who took off will have to spend the day taking care of their kids because the schools are closed.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

. Even more so if you go for the PhD
They don't need to go up to PhD, they can get their Specialiats Degree (between a masters and a doctorate) and increase their salary and retirement benefits.
They don't pay into the social security system so they never draw social security unless they have worked some other job than teaching.

I'm aware of the specialists degree. That's what my dad had.
I guess the entire point of my post was that it's possible to make a decent living as a teacher if they put forth the effort. The benefits are damn good, in that you are guaranteed money for life. If you get a nice little side job upon retirement to supplement the retirement then you should be good to go.
I went the engineering route rather than follow the parents, but it's something to consider for those who want to teach.
