This is the first one in Baton Rouge proper. There are 2 in St. George that are either open or about to open. And another one in Central.

They are aggressively expanding in the southern part of the US with their purchase of a lot of Winn Dixie stores too.

quote:

German grocery chain Aldi has purchased 3 acres near the Cortana Amazon fulfillment center for nearly $1.35 million, according to the deal filed Wednesday with the East Baton Parish Clerk of Court’s office.

The company is looking to open a store at 9720 Cortana Place near the intersection of Airline Highway and Florida Boulevard. It would be Aldi’s third Baton Rouge location.

Aldi purchased the property from HPC Florline Land LLC, which had owned the property since 2014, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Tax Assessor’s Office.

The grocery chain opened its second Baton Rouge location on O’Neal Lane in January and has another store near Interstate 10 and Siegen Lane.

Aldi has 10 additional south Louisiana stores and is expected to open more as part of an aggressive multiyear expansion plan. In August, Aldi acquired Florida-based Southeastern Grocers Inc. and its 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets in Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.

They could use another Trader Joe's location in Baton Rouge somewhere. The one on Perkins is way too crowded.

I went into the one off Siegen/I-10 and just don't see the wonder of them.

I haven't been back home in about 5 or so years, but that seems like a terrible place for an Aldi's. Has Amazon changed the area that much?

Don't they already have a Walmart and Albertsons right there too?

Aldi’s nuts are great.
Can’t vouch for much else.

It's definitely an improvement but it's not even going to be fancy. There is a Starbucks right there now next to Cane's and some of those new carwash oil change places. That Northern Tool place isn't bad either. Rouses just opened a brand new store to the west of that area off Florida. To the east, there is a new Discount Tire, McDonalds, Wing Stop, a Pharmacy, and an urgent care center.

It's nice to see some of those empty plots of land or empty storefronts filled again.

Most of the vacant land immediately north of the Amazon site and the Wal Mart is being developed as distribution centers. The stuff along Florida and Airline like where ALDI is going seems to be more retail.

Winn Dixie stores

They had a good run back in the 80’s and 90’s before Walmart got in the grocery business.

I remember Winn Dixie opened a brand new store on Prospect Blvd in Houma in the early 2000’s to relocate their store that was in the Lynn Park Shopping center.

Cannata’s then moved into the old Winn Dixie location in Lynn Park. From what I heard Cannata’s outsold WinnDixie and Winn Dixie shut down their brand new store a few years later and left the Houma-Thibodaux market.

Cannata’s would fall victim to Hurricane Ida and not reopen the east side location. Roses Discount Stores now fills the space.

Thanks.

If Aldi wanted to be somewhere on Airline, seems they should have went to the other side of it, more towards Blue Bayou/HPC and all that (can't even remember that street's name anymore).

Rouses and Hi-Nabor both have stores north of Florida, and both seem to be very busy. I'd argue that this highly visible ALDI location on Florida/Airline is a better spot than those two stores.

The Siegen location looks like a tornado has gone through it every time I've been.

The Central location is well-stocked, and organized.

What could be the difference? Same company.

I think it would do well somewhere along Airline in Prairieville. I also think they could probably make one work

I suspect Pecue/I-10 will also be a great spot for them once that interchange opens.

They already have one sort of near there on Siegen at I-10. But it's not unlike Aldi to have locations within a couple of miles of each other.

I've heard that there may be one going up on Airline in Gonzales too near the Malco cinema.

When we lived in Pittsburg, these things were flipping everywhere. Most of them are a little smaller than a typical grocery, so they can fit them in shopping centers where you wouldn't be able to make a Rouses or Wal Mart work. They don't seem to have a lot of employees, and run pretty lean.
