I had to pick up some equipment in Pineapple, AL once. Back before GPS wasn't common. Couldn't find the house. Stopped at a house and asked. They didn't have any idea who that was or where that house was. Ended up driving up and down a bunch of county roads, stopping and asking people who were sitting out on their porches (there were a lot). Nobody knew nothing. Finally found the guy.......Next door neighbor to the very first house I stopped at.
Keep in mind, I wasn't collecting a bill or repoing anything. They had some medical equipment that was rented and wasn't needed anymore.

Honestly, the vast majority of small, rural towns in Alabama are shitholes. Several have some redeeming qualities or unique character, but most are filled with poverty and low education levels. I sometimes wonder how my wife's immediate family came to be as remarkable as they are when I'm around some of their extended family.

Unfortunately, this can describe much of the country. Outside of a few exceptions, most small places are inhabited by the people who were unable to leave them - the capable and intelligent left for better economic opportunity in a city.

Outside Reform AL in 1978, working on a Governors Race. Stopped in this little country store, men in the back, playing checkers. Went over to talk them. Couple of them were, well, ugly, rude to me about guy I was working for. Turned out this was a Klan hot bed.
Old Gentlemen intervened, he told us in the most polite courteous manner, “Boys, you are young, got your whole life ahead of you. I recommend you turn around and walk out the door you came in and head on down the road. Now if you don’t, you are going to wind up on a dirt road somewhere, and IF you wake up, you will have been beaten half to death”. We turned and hit it! True story! Reform AL
