Meaning, if it’s 100 degrees outside, most homes will only get down to around 80 degrees.
Did they really need to throw that example in order for us to know what they were talking about?
We all know what 20 degrees lower means

Replaced 3 years ago with new Carrier units. Prior to that, the 20 degree rule definitely seemed to be in effect.
Also my power bill is half of what it used to be in the summer.
I had the same experience and will never buy anything other than Carrier ever again.

Ya see......what you need to do is get yourself a couple of $500 window units instead of one crappy $12,000 central unit.
Call me trashy all you want but that’s exactly what we have. One in the den, one for the kitchen and living room, and one for each 3 bedrooms. I promise you if those air conditioners in the bedrooms are going it’s well below 20 degrees than the outside temperature.

Here's another angle.
Alabama Power is a subsidiary of Southern Company. Ticker symbol SO. Good dividend stock. Disclosure, I own some. They are highly regulated. The more electricity you use, the more money the company and shareholders make. This is lip service to appease the regulatory bodies that govern them. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

My next door neighbor is a long-time Carrier salesmen in their commerical division. He gave me a friends and family deal. Still expensive, but not as much as if I had gone with Trane or another reputable manufacturer.
And let us not forget, Dr. Carrier invented air conditioning in 1902 and the company still holds its products and innovations to the same standards that Dr. Carrier set forth all those years ago.
What I fear is the jinx. As soon as I post all this shite about how great my AC is, watch this motherfricker go out tomorrow.

I've been an advocate of window units for years, bud. Nowadays we pay $10k+ for central units that struggle to do what a $200 window unit can do. Not trashy......cool.

Tell me more. I want to learn. Make a separate topic on Outdoor or Home Improvment Board if need be, to keep out the riff raff.
There is a controller called a CoolBot that overrides the thermostat of the ac unit. Built the cooler with 6” thick walls using 2” thick insulating panels doubled up in the walls with plywood exterior. Works great for a flower cooler for my wife and a deer cooler for me.
CoolBot

Most decent hoa wouldn’t allow this level of trashy ness

What kind of lifespan do you get out of the window AC? Sounds interesting.

We really should have won that war.
I’ve used a thermometer on the A/C from the vent at 62 and ambient temperature at 72 when it’s hovering at 100 outside. What kind of nonsense are these people trying to sell here? Do they not think we actually deal with summer temperatures in the south, and we’re somehow going to be tricked?

Honestly, I see mandatory smart thermostats in our future so they can throttle is.
My EMC installed a throttle without our permission and I had to force them to come remove it. The people that agree to it get a whopping $30 per year off their bill.

This is a short TV station "news" article, so I'm thinking the quote must be taken out of context and was meant to apply to window units. Anyone who is aware that the air intake is inside the house, and therefore the drop will always be measured from internal ambient, not external temps, would immediately understand why this was nonsense for a split system.
Posted on 6/25/24 at 7:38 pm to adamau
Lies. Our home stays at 67° despite 100°+ outside.

Wrong.

You have to be strategic about their placement and seal them from the outside well, but my house is 2500 sqft and stays cool with my main unit basically only giving an assist to these cheap throwaway window units.
I don't care if window units look white trash sticking out of a nice house, the neighbors can deal with it as long as I have my haven from 100+ degree heat indexes
This is what I have going on. I keep a window unit in the bedrooms and close all of those vents from the main unit. The main unit cools the common areas to 73 and doesn't work nearly as hard.

5 years so far. But I don’t run it all the time. Wife does flowers for weddings and uses it to store arrangements and fresh cut flowers for weddings.

How much did that cost?
I don't remember the actual numbers but I do remember a year later doing an ROI calculation based on my power bill savings and it would be ten years before I broke even, assuming the new units don't shite the bed before then. And in the meantime, they actually work and keep my house at the temps I want. So it's not cheap, but you are comfortable and will eventually save money.
Of all the money I've dumped into this house since 2017, I think the AC upgrade, while painful, was necessary, and is the best money spent on it.
*no jinx*

I’ll turn mine to 80 as soon as they do it at their offices.
