Pretty sure homelessness isn't limited to Austin.

Pretty sure that's the city this thread is based on. And how they are combating it. Name me one republican city thats in the top 10....no top 20 of homelessness

Homeless people congregate in population centers and population centers are typically more liberal. You really got me. I guess my whole point is now proven wrong and it's only liberals that contribute to the homeless problem.

Exactly. There are plenty of beds in homeless shelters that go empty every night. Why? The urban campers don't want to abide by the shelters' rules, particularly "no drugs".

They don’t need housing. They aren’t just a couple paychecks away from getting back on their feet. They are either mentally ill and/or addicted to something and giving them a roof over there head solves none of their problems. I think we should build huge drug housing units where they can do all the drugs they want or get treatment. Put them in the middle of nowhere and provide free transportation to them and get their collateral damage out of our cities

They congregate where they are tolerated.

Buying a home for the homeless doesn't solve anything. There is a reason why they are homeless and that is the problem that needs to be solved. I always thought the first step in helping the homeless is getting them a job. You will find out real quick if they want to be homeless or not if you do that.

Most will work a couple of days, accumulate a couple hundred in wages and disappear.

I did get you. Its not a problem faced by republican cities so don't blame them when a democratic run city fails at solving the issues.

On a side note 53% of our homeless people are in cali. Wow

Looking at the top 100 cities in the US, if I'm basing it on mayoral party affiliation, I see Jacksonville, OKC, and Mesa as the first three (R) controlled cities. You want to tell me that those cities don't face issues with homelessness? Look, I'm not defending the liberal cities. I'm pointing out that this is a complicated issue that won't get solved by blaming someone else. In fact, most problems we face a society won't get solved by blaming someone else.

Sounds like a good way to build a massive resort style heroin den.

It baffles my mind why Travis County and the surrounding counties don't employ the old depression era tactic of using the police to force the hobos to get out of town by sundown/make them feel unwelcome (Note: enforcing loitering or vagrancy laws will most likely lead to a lawsuit). Life in a hobo jungle or out in the boonies where there's no crack rocks or free services ought to take care of the problem right quick. Depriving the bums of society's indulgence is key.

Los Angeles tried this. It didn't work.

Liberals moved to Austin and are now implementing their policies there. Not sure why they don’t realize it’s the policies that failed, not the geography.

Whatever, dude. I've made my point. It's not worth trying to educate someone like yourself who doesn't want to be educated.

99% of homeless people fall into three categories

Mental illness, drug use/addiction, and a chosen vagabond lifestyle.

You will never be able to give those individuals a home of any kind and expect them to magically become contributing members of society. The more you give, the more they will take until you address the actual problem

I can tell you that OKC has very little problem with homelessness compared to Austin. I have lived in OKC for 20 years and have family and wife's family in Austin. Its night and day

Offer each a $100, a sack lunch, and bottle of liquor to get on the bus, and their homeless problem could be cut in half in a week.

Can we build in a little bonus pay for the bus drivers?
