After OK Law Change - Map Shows Where Child Marriage Is Legal

A new Newsweek map shows where child marriage remains legal in the United States, after Oklahoma recently became the 17th state to ban it.
The Oklahoma Legislature in May approved a bill that raises the minimum age for marriage to 18 with no exceptions, and it was signed into law by Governor Kevin Stitt. It will go into effect on November 1.

Child marriage remains legal in 33 states, including a handful where there is no minimum age to marry, according to Unchained At Last.
The organization says nearly 315,000 children as young as 10 were married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2021, mostly girls married to adult men.

Before 2018, child marriage was legal in all 50 states. But since then, 17 states have ended it by raising the legal age of marriage to 18, according to Unchained at Last, an organization working to end child marriage in the United States.
Child marriage is defined as a marriage where at least one of the parties is under 18, which the United Nations calls a human rights violation and a form of forced marriage since at least one or both parties have not given their full, free and informed consent.

This practice is said to be particularly bad in the Traveler communities.
And is likely just as bad in the Mormon community.

Ginsburg wanted the age of consent lowered to 13 for all states.

Looking at the rate of child marriages, doesn't appear many people under 18 are getting married these days...

We are generally past the days where kids are getting married straight out of high school.

Solving near nil problem? Funny.
Way bigger problem is lack of commitment (marriage) to families all ages on up.

So, if an 18 year old married a 17 year old they’ve violated the human rights of the 17 year old?

Gypsies, Pikies, whatever you call them.
They are nomad communities.

99.999% of this is two teenagers getting married. Any law should be about an older person marring a younger.

Irish and Scottish gypsies. They're big into RV selling and repair scams.
quote:
How it works: Scammers steal real RV photos or create sleek, phony dealership sites. They advertise RVs on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or RV Trader for drastically below market value (often using "sob stories" like moving out of the country).
The trap: They pressure you to wire money, use a payment app (like Venmo/Zelle "Friends & Family"), or buy gift cards to "secure" the RV or pay for a "shipping/inspection period". Once you pay, they vanish, and the RV is never delivered.
quote:
How it works: While you are traveling, a "mobile mechanic" or tech may approach you at an RV park, claiming to notice a major issue (e.g., severe roof damage, axle problems, or gas leaks).
The trap: They will ask for cash upfront to buy necessary parts, and then disappear without performing the work

That was kinda my point in asking if an 18 year old marrying a 17 year old has somehow violated the human rights of the 17 year old as the UN apparently says.
I went high school with a girl who was 17 years old when we graduated. Less than a week after graduation, she married her HS boyfriend who had graduated the year before and had just turned 19. That was 38 years ago. They’re still together to this day and have three or four kids plus a handful of grandkids and are quite happy in the life they’ve built together. We ran into them not long ago and she was gushing over her newest grandbaby.
I say all this to get across the point that while it’s creepy and abhorrent for a 20 or 30something to marry a teenage, and rightly should be banned; I’d wager the overwhelming majority of teen marriages are between two teens, or at least an age gap of no more than 2-5 years at most. And as the stats in the OP shows, even this is very rare nowadays.
In fact, I’d say the practice of Americans either not marrying and starting a family at all, or delaying it into their 30s, is a far bigger societal problem than the minuscule number of teens who are getting married.

Interesting since ~25% of the UN's makeup is Muslim-majority countries (Muhammad, as an adult, married a child of 6yrs old and "consummated" the marriage with her when she turned 9yrs old).

why are we trying to solve a problem that statistically doesnt exist? those numbers are over a decade old and certainly this has gone down by now to the point doesnt really exist outside of teens marrying other teens....and to that who cares?
i mean im fine with the law but you are on here acting like there is some big % of the population marrying 10-12 year olds
but i do agree with the law, prolly should be whatever age of consent is in that state as the muslim population still likes to do these types of things.

Irish travelers and Gypsies.
Those are pretty annoying groups in the countries where they’re actually common, but those groups barely exist in the US, so I don’t know why that poster was acting like the Irish Travelers and Gypsies are having a bunch of child marriages in the US.
