He’s your son’s coach, not your coach. Let your son deal with his coach on his own.

Dude, stop. He is in 9th grade and will get the number he is assigned. I was like 46 in 9th grade.

Have you tried talking to him about it another time? I'm sure someone has his phone number or office number (if he's a teacher).

Walking back to the locker room after a game is probably one of the worst times to talk to the coach about a jersey number. He's trying to get his post-game speech to his team ready in his head, and you show up to complain.

when I was in hs, only the studs got to pick their numbers, same went for wristbands, elbow, forearm, knee pads, etc., you had to earn the right to wear “bling”

Tell your son to man up and ask for the number if he wants it. His daddy asking for it just makes both of ya'll look like pussies.

You sound like a real tool bag. Coach should guarantee your son doesn't get 18.

Get a baseball bat. Put a spike through it. Approach the coach with a menacing look on you face. Put your face 1 inch from his face. Scream as loudly as you can "is now a good time MFER?".

Make a facebook post about what you want and share it with the entire administration.

This is what a rational person would do.
