Adolph L. Lowe was born in Nordhausen, Germany. Joined the Navy at the age of 20. Served through the Civil War. Was actived at the Battle of Port Royal and present at the bombardment of Charleston, SC. He was stationed on the Ottowa, the Seminole and the Wabash, which were among the first gunboats to be built by the US Navy. He was discharged at the end of the War due to injuries received.
He re-enlisted as a Carpenter's Mate (E5) during WWI. Adolph was sent to Virginia Beach with a machine gun battalion.
only one other person can claim to be a vet of those two wars
He was a member of the G.A.R., the Commodore of the Naval Veterans, a member of the Virginia Beach Masonic Order, No. 243, and of the American Legion at Lansdale.
Adolph spoke eight languages fluently, including Greek and Latin. He attended the Lutheran Church.
Lowe had previously attempted to reenlist in 1898 to fight in the Spanish-American War but was rejected because he had "bad teeth"
Adoplh died in 1922 at age 82

I have a group photo that includes great-grandfather during his G.A.R. days at a reunion in Gettysburg in the early 1900s. It is so cool.

Adolph appears to have joined the Argentine Navy before the Civil War and liked to make grape juice after returning from the Great War.

If he was Catholic, he would have needed to speak Latin in order to understand mass
