I shopped around, where we live, and decided on state farm.
They have a teen driving program, an app, where the teen drives so many miles while it tracks them .
Then they are approved for the program.
It still made my insurance go up $300 or so a month

It's the liability that you're paying for.

I've had a decade of youthful drivers in my house- my premiums have varied between $640 to a high of $785 (after my 17 yr old totaled a 4 runner and a brand new $100k BMW).
All drivers need to be on policy and you absolutely need an umbrella policy if you own your home or have any savings to speak of, with young drivers.
My buddy did the "hide the teen drivers" thing on his insurance. He never got busted. But when his son went to get insurance on his own after college, they totally screwed him because he had ZERO history of insurance coverage. His first policy, he was paying thru the teeth. Thanks dad.

Best thing you can do with a teen driver is buy them a beater with cash so you only have to carry liability
I did this but ended up getting full coverage anyway because it was only like $18/month more for full coverage vs liability only.

Crazy how things are different from state to state. Some friends son just turned 16 and get his license. They have an old beater Jeep Cherokee that they were going to list him as the driver. The insurance to have him on that car was insanely expensive even with just collision, something like $3,500 per year.
The insurance agent said for costs to come down, new drivers need to be in a newer car with all the safety features, like blind spot warning, auto braking, etc. A less than four year old car with the safety features and with full coverage would be around $1,500 for the year.

It's bullshite since the kid literally never drives your car. But that's how they do it. It fricking sucks.
Yeah, that stinks!
I guess the good news is kids don't stay on your policy forever.

180 a month with decent coverage. He got discounts for good grades and something else. Could have gotten down to 150

Most people that have a kid that's 16+ have at least a decent amount in retirement savings etc. Just suck it up and pay it if you can.

That is true. But when… and this is inevitable… they have that first fender bender be prepared to be dropped.

You were mis-informed. Trust me.

4 kids. Never added any. State Farm 3 minor wrecks over a ten year period by 3 different kids. All covered . Now this was over ten years ago, so things may have changed. Clued in to this by a good friend who was an adjuster .

The only one of my four who did not have an accident while in my house had zero issues getting insured when he bought his first vehicle.

Coming from an insurance professional. You are right and wrong. They are covered as long as they have your permission to drive the vehicle

quote:Im not sure I would classify it as hiding if you contacted your agent and informed them.....but you are correct in that it hammers the kid later in life if they never got rated, this was what was told to me by my agent when I called to notify them of a new teen driver. At some point you have to get them rated prior to heading out, or it is penal.

This is also right and wrong. They are "covered" under the Louisiana revised statutes if they are driving your vehicle with your permission. However, all this means is that your insurer is on the hook to the person that your child is liable to as a result of the wreck - up to statutory minimum coverage.
In other words, "covered" means your insurer may have to pay the statutory minimum limits covering your kid's liability. However, there is likely no coverage beyond statutory mimimums regardless of what limits you pay for on the policy, no comprehensive, no collision, no UM, none of your kid's own medicals or damages. In addition, be prepared to have your policy canceled and potentially defend a suit by your insurer to recover what they had to pay based on your misrepresentations.
If you want to know how safe it is to let your kids drive without paying to insure them, read your policy very carefully or, better, have an insurance lawyer read it for you. I doubt they'll tell you to roll the dice.

I was told if they live in your house and are licensed they have to be on the policy.

I called to add my child. I was told the same, wait until my kid ever gets into an accident. Then I can add him, insurance will cover the damages but then I would have to add him. I asked if I could get a work up on how much it would be to just add him and I was told that if they do the work up then I had to add him because then he’d be in the system.

Any ideas on insuring kid going off to college outside Louisiana?
Will companies take that location into consideration?

I never specifically named either of my children on my insurance when they started driving. My sin wrecked his car once, I just told em he had taken it to the store but wasn't a full time driver.
You can only get away with that once!!!
Adding my son would've increased my monthly insurance payment by $1,000!
