I just signed a new policy that had its statement list the following disclaimer
“All persons dwelling in the listed household age 15 and above shall be listed on the policy”

I was a P&C Agent for many many years and each auto company tends to be alittle different. The policy language usually is the final word on coverage. Normally if a youthful driver in a household has an accident…….depending on many factors usually the other vehicle hit is covered in the accident……the vehicle the youthful was driving possibly will not be covered because the driver was not listed as a vehicle operator on the household policy. Depending on how bad the accident is the possibility will always exists that there will be a coverage issue. Another item - please do not put a new driver in any vehicle with liability limits less than 50/100/50. I personally recommend at least 100/300/100 and higher for the vehicle that the youthful is driving. Remember at 16 is when a new driver has to be added if their driving and have a valid drivers license. There are big discounts available for kids with A/B average, driver’s training, and certain defensive driving classes, etc. Sorry for the length but this is such a critical issue for a new youthful driver. They are going to hit something statistically speaking under the age of 21………protect your family with very high liability limits and definitely monitor Life 360 for their driving habits. We have all been there and gone through it. Good luck and I hope this helps!

As an agent this complete horseshite. When they are in permit status that don’t get added, but when they’re fully licensed, yes they absolutely have to be added. I guarantee this is a csr at an agency telling them this and not someone that could get their balls clipped over something as dumb as this.

My 17 yr old had a total loss accident a few months ago. It wasn't her fault, but man like an 80k insurance claim. I'd rather just pay the $250/mo for 5 years or so than risk losing my house.

It's actually high for good reason. Most kids can't drive for shite.

Agreed. An 18 yr old kid hit my 17 yr old daughter. I wasn't there so no clue if she was 100% at fault, but they paid the claim. There was a whole lot of inexperience in that accident. I'm just glad they both walked away from it.
No way I'd have her driving around with no insurance or perceived coverage with our entire net worth on the line.
Most people that have a kid that's 16+ have at least a decent amount in retirement savings etc. Just suck it up and pay it if you can.

quote:This is completely false and you run the risk of the insurer denying a claim if they feel like you intentionally didn’t add your kid to the policy to avoid having to pay a premium. Fraud by concealment
I’ve heard from multiple people that insurance agents are telling people now that they didn’t need to add their kids to their insurance
Read your policy language carefully and read everything you signed when you took out the policy. Guarantee there’s something in all those forms that covers this.

The insurance agents won’t put it in writing.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever read. People from Louisiana are so cheap and are always looking for a go around no wonder they love Trump
You voted for that idiot Kamala? LOL, that’s a joke. Anyway, my insurance didn’t charge me anything for the permit period. I let them know I had a child with a permit. I wasn’t charged until the license was official. See how easy that was not to be a smartass. You can’t really be a smartass when you support the weird arse Democrat freak show.

I’m teaching a 15 year old to drive and wondered if Ineeded to put her on insurance. I take this thread as a no. Thanks for the legal advice.
You need to call your insurance company; some will charge you for a permitted driver and some will add them for free.
To OP, according to my agent they will cover a wreck for a child driver that isn't on the policy and then drop you. He indicated once you get dropped it will be difficult to get a reputable company to sell you a policy without extremely high rates.

Complete and total bullshite. An unlisted driver living in the household is an excluded driver. ZERO coverage.
People, espcially parents, try to scam the insurace company and find out the hard way everyday.

We live in Orange Beach. Our oldest daughter we added to an older vehicle with liability only to save some dough; no accidents or tickets so no problem. Our middle child, we were switching carriers and was going to do the same. Was told we didn’t have too as long as the car was insured and he lived with us. Got in a wreck, other car was fully covered and they made us add him.

One of the most dangerous locations for new drivers is in and around a high school parking lot

I have to make this decision next month, need to buy him a vehicle and put it under my name before he actually gets his license

Insurance will be more than car note.
If I had half the money I pay on taxes and insurance I could probably retire

but we did put her in the oldest car we had AND made her pay us the difference per 6mo policy for coverage.
In LA every driver on the policy is rated versus every car on the policy. If you drive a really nice, expensive car and your teenager is in a beater, they still are rated on your car as well. So the price fricking skyrockets because of that.
It's bullshite since the kid literally never drives your car. But that's how they do it. It fricking sucks.

That won’t be difficult because note will be zero
