Remote-controlled “drone ships” will be plying the sealanes without crews on board by the end of the decade, according to Rolls-Royce.

The FTSE 100 company best known for its aircraft engines is heading a consortium working to develop the technology needed for ships controlled from land bases, making them cheaper to run.

“This is happening. It’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when,” said Oskar Levander, head of innovation for Rolls’s marine unit. “We will see a remote controlled ship in commercial use by the end of the decade.”

How will they defend themselves from pirates?

With no crew to take hostage, I imagine they will give zero fricks.

They could enact this technology at this moment, but I bet it would take 25 years to get the river pilots of the lower mississippi river to give up any control at all.

With no crew to shoot at them, they can just board the vessel and offload cargo.

PS - I could see remote operation of the vessel for steering and speed etc. But what happens when something go wrong with the engine or other systems? Some things need a human there to handle.

I hear ships that size are pretty expensive. And the cargo its hauling probably isn't cheap either.

you also can carry more cargo as you wont need room for living quarters.

you can replace the entire superstructure with a simple mast

With no crew there won't be anyone to force to unlock the cargo holds. The entire ship can be built like a vault.

The biggest danger would come from hackers that could potentially take remote control of the ship.

Work in the field, in the IT side of things. This is an overly optimistic timeline. The security isn't there. What's going to happen when some Chinese hacker decides he's bored and drives a VLCC right into another ship, or an OSV right into a rig?

Marine transportation is the most exposed of the 3 by far. Everyone is just whistling by the graveyard.

What's more, Satellite antennas can go out because of faulty equipment, general wear and tear, etc. Also, out in the middle of the ocean, you run out of coverage for certain types of satellites.

ETA: I would become a very in-demand person because of my experience and skill-set, but I just don't see it happening industry wide in the next 10 years.

Everything you brought up are good points but certainly not insurmountable within a decade.

GPS systems are critical but every ship can be fitted with an Inertial Navigation System (if they aren't already) which will help the ship maintain its transit lane until satcom is restored.

You can also create a LoS tether if you will between ships to maintain control.

If the demand for autonomous shipping reaches a tipping point, solutions will be found

I agree security must be fully proven and continuously vetted for vulnerabilities.

Let's think this through.

Freighter off the coast of Somalia gets hijacked. Somali's make it through whatever automated- and remote-controlled defenses thrown at them.

No crew to take hostage. Shipping company/Navy/Coast Guard cuts power to boat, makes it impossible to run.

Somali's are sitting out in the middle of the ocean on a dead boat with a naval group headed their way.

Can you explain how the pirates have any leverage at all to take what they want?

Nevermind if you put anti-personnel measures, including the loud loud music on the boat that makes it impossible to just wait it out.

So awesome. Let's have everything robotic so we can have way less more jobs for people to earn money

Those big ships have such a small crew (relative to their size) anyway.

Kinda surprising...

Yep. And it doesn't have to have a typical deck since there's no crew.

Or you could even use submarines that run just below the surface to keep anyone from getting on it in the first place.

Mankind has always adjusted to new technology, no reason to believe we can't continue to do so.
