Active Duty service personnel should be exempt from paying Federal taxes imho.
I said this when I was active duty and I've said it as a retiree.
Anytime you are being paid by the federal government for military service to the country .... taxing said service member is nothing more than than robbing Peter to pay Paul.

QUIT SOCIAL ENGINEERING the military. Why fix what isn't broken? That goes for all the free tranny transformation and TitleIX-like BS imposed by the last three presidents. Leave our military alone unless you are funding them more modern equipment and/or housing.

Give them a raise to make up for the taxes. This way everyone is on a level playing field and we don't have all these complex tax benefits for some and not for others.

Yes, it's a temporary medical retirement meaning I have to revalidate it periodically with the VA.

I'd be AOK with that and honestly, if that happened, I'd tell my kids to serve in some way that isn't really on the front lines i.e. have them pay for dental school and be an Army dentist or something.

We did not pay income tax while in Vietnam and I was in a combat zone so I received about $80 more a month for a grand total of about $250 a month. We only drew about $10 a month in MPC (Military Payment Currency) which was kind of like Monopoly money. Not much to spend it on near the DMZ.
Also, the VA disability I draw now is not taxable nor can it be touched by the local courts, including divorce, garnishments, etc. Only the Federal Courts can touch it for other tax violations or if you’re jailed for more than 90 days because of a felony conviction. It is one of the most protected sources of income.
I was once told it is sort of treated as an insurance settlement or the like.
