For the sake of discussion, would you be for/against a complete exemption of federal income tax for U.S. military service members who have served active duty for a specified number of years?

If you're for the exemption, how many years do you think one should serve as active duty to qualify for the exemption? 5 years? 10 years?

In a purely accounting sense, they are already exempt, as are all federal employees. You can't owe money to those who pay you. They just lie about what the pay is.

I think tax free while serving and tax free for life if you put in 20 years. If you leave before 20 you rejoin the national tax base.

While in the military on active duty? Sure.

Once military service is complete? Nope! You're a citizen. Pay your taxes.

disagree, a lot of military folks come out with some pretty decent quals/training/degrees that they might not have had if not for the military, and many are able to pursue full time civvy careers while continuing as mil reservists and end up with lifetime pensions and health care, as well as free college tuition for their kids(in some cases)

Seriously? Want to know how good all those combat vets would be without support from others?

Only active duty should be exempt. MoH recipients should also forgo taxes.

I'll even say people disabled due to crippling injuries suffered in the military.

No, I'm not talking about all these hollering "I've got PTSD."

I'm talking guys that got their legs blown off or lost their eyesight and things of that nature. .

Pay taxes while on active duty. If in long enough to retire, no federal taxes on retirement pension. Medically retired should also pay no taxes on their pension.

In theory I’m ok with it. In practical use I don’t see how it isn’t abused so I would oppose

you can get free parking at DFW for certain types of medals, you have to get the plate, at work it's rare to see a vehicle with a plate that doesn't have some sort of medal received on it

But now I know you were a 42A. Thanks for the support.
