Credentialed, not educated.

ACT scores fall to 30 year low

The average scores have been negatively affected by the increase of low scoring applicants, who have no business going to a university.

In the past, these applicants wouldn't have been accepted to a university, let alone graduate high school.

The excuse of racial bias and the push to diversify, have lead to a growing pool of test takers who would've otherwise pursued skillset based careers.

This is the reason universities are beginning to eliminate any ACT/SAT style of prerequisites based on academic knowledge and which predicts likelihood of success.

When I graduated high school (33 years ago) the National average was like 19 and it was 17 or 18 for Louisiana

If you graduated 33 years ago, I'm pretty sure the highest possible score was 34.5 (rounded up to 35). Average scores went up a decent amount when they switched to a maximum 36.0 later that year.

Disagree.

You can see the rapid downward trend started around 2012.

The idea that everyone should attend college started long before that.

The ACT is so much easier than the SAT, if you can’t get 25 on it you shouldn’t be admitted to college.

Those tests are pointless anyway.

These tests doesn't do a good job measuring overall individual competency. I know people that made perfect scores but dumb as a rock in the common sense department.

That does not negate the fact that the results point to a clearly failing education system.

Why do people disregard statistics based off of anecdotal accounts?

Covid did a number on these kids. It was already a major concern and then fuel was thrown on the fire

I’d be interested to see the comparison based on quartiles. How do the top 25% compare to twenty years ago? Is the bottom of the bell curve crashing or is everything declining?

From what I can tell, I think the kids need more time to take the ACT...my guess is a large majority don't finish 2-3 sections and have to guess on a bunch of the questions.

It’s always been like that. Why do we need to dumb it down now?

When I took the test 40 years ago there were no study aids or practice tests like they have now. Very few kids back then scored 30 or above. I know of several in the past years that have scored 30 - 32. So it seems the average should be up. The fact that it's not is very telling.
