After running around to multiple stores last night, we pulled the car in the garage and forgot about our groceries in the trunk. We had a 2.25 lb beef roast and a 2 lb package of chicken breast in there. The garage was cold, probably around 35-40 degrees. When I pulled the groceries out this morning, the meat itself was still very cold but the styrofoam packages were not anymore (obviously).

We had planned on cooking the roast in the crock pot for 7-9 hours today. I refrigerated both immediately after bringing them in. Will they be OK to eat or is best just to pick some more up at the store?

You'll be fine. If everyone is going to be worried about it just pick up more to save the hassle.

I had a bag that slid under my golf clubs for 4 days.

The 4lbs of ground meat was pretty ripe when I found it.

If it was indeed 35-40 in your garage I would think it would be fine. Your fridge is around that temperature anyway. I would rinse it off and smell it before I did anything with it though. If your the least bit unsure I would just by another one.

Oh and nb4 your maid doesn't do your grocery shopping for you.

If you're sure your garage was that cold you're good.

I doubt it was that cold. It was around 37 degrees when I left the house this morning and it was close to 60 degrees in my garage. I am not sure I would eat anything that needed to be refrigerated out of the groceries.

Grocery store meat and poultry display cases are supposed to stay 41 degrees or colder.

What's the best that could happen? You save a few dollars
What's the worst that could happen? You shite through a screen door for days.

Verdict: Toss it

I could use a good cleanse.

Verdict: Leave out a week and eat raw.

If the car interior/trunk was actually at this temp, then it is just like being in the fridge.

When you weigh the alternatives, the only right choice is not to take the chance. It's just a few bucks to avoid the chance of a 3 day shite storm. Is there really any decision to be made?

I doubt you're garage was actually 35-40 degrees. But hey, if you want to risk your family and your anus for a couple of dollars of meat go for it.

If you are going to cook it, especially for several hours....you are good to go.

Just be careful in your prep that you don't cross contaminate anything...same as you normally do I hope.

Roast is good no doubt but the chicken may be suspect. Smell the chicken and if smells a bit diff than normal, toss it.
