It will be something my so and I talk about after I graduate in another year. Baton Rouge is out first choice, but if I can't get a job offer in South Louisiana we'll start looking out of state. I'll be lobbying for D.C., Chicago, Nashville, Denver area or the pacific coast. She'll probably want Texas (Austin, San Antonio, or Galveston). I'd be willing to compromise on Austin, but we'll see.

when I graduated from LSU, my philosophy was to just go wherever my career took me...and that has worked out well. I have moved several times to locations including a number of those mentioned here. all of the areas where I have lived (including BR) really are what you make of them...if you sit home all day reading the internet and listening to people talk an area up or down, eventually you believe it. the main thing is that you find a town where you can afford to live in a desirable area with good schools...they all have such an area.

if you and/or your wife place a high value on being around family and friends or being in a familiar surroundings, then you may not be as happy outside of LA as you think you will be...I have been away from LA for about 30 years now and still miss it a lot.

I guess my advice to you is that it does not hurt to move around a little to experience different cultures, as long as it works for you financially. be aware, that wherever you settle while your kids are school-aged is likely gonna be where they consider "home" and you are likely going to spend a while there.

Moved to Charlotte 2 years ago after 30 years in Louisiana.

Don't regret it for one second. Direct 1.5 flight to MSY, 4 real seasons, in a couple hours you can be in the mountains (Asheville) or on the coast (Charleston).

Have been debating moving back to be closer to family (that will never ever leave), but there's just no area of the state that is comparable for conveniences & quality of life.

Born raised BR
College in NOLA
Left the state around age 25
Memphis, Denver, DC, Va Beach until age 35 or so

Back to NOLA for work from 35-47, loved it but Katrina right in the middle so tough times too.

Left 2.5 years ago for more work.

It was good to move the first time, needed for me to grow.

Second move I hated and am miserable in Tx. Doesn't help I'm dying of cancer but Texas is just awful, even healthy.

So get out young, go back old IMO

Moved to BR for college. College was cool, after though got a job in BR and stayed for 3 more years.

After 9 years in BR I was sick of it. Traffic. Your stuck in a college town. More traffic. Etc.

Moved to Alaska 2 years ago, and you couldn't pay me enough money to go back.

Moving away from the family wasnt difficult because we all spread out after getting out of the house after college

Charlotte is great for families especially. Good public schools as long as you live in the right area. In state tuition for UNC if your kid is smart. Doesn't have the traffic of Atlanta, everything is reasonably accessible. Airport hub for AA, so can fly almost anywhere nonstop in the continental U.S. And cheap flights to MSY if you take allegiant out of Concord. Not sure if it's the oil/gas connection, or what, but Houston or Dallas seems to be much more popular for LSU graduates. Maybe safety in numbers.

Grew up in BR. Finally left 4 years ago. Nothing major, just the NS. Missed it at first, but you couldn't pay me to go back. I just wish we could have run further.

Wife has put herself ib position to almost be able to name her destination in about a year and a half. We're seriously thinking about it. As long as we stay in the southeast(most likely) I should be able to transfer with my job, so family will be the only reason to stay, but in 10 years it's likely that only my parents will be remaining here anyway.

The little one about to start school in a couple years got me thinking. $5- $10K a year for a decent school!? And bad roads!?

I'd suggest that you do it before the kids get too old. I've lived outside of LA twice but now I have 2 kids that are 10 and the thought of uprooting them makes it more difficult.

I travel to Atl for work occasionally. Initially it had zero appeal to me. Over the years I've grown to appreciate what atl has to offer. Now it's on the short list for my next move. ATL's economy seems very diverse.

As far as a world outside of 225... get out and see for yourself. What is the risk? Moving somewhere and it not working out is not a failure. If you are young, get out now. You become less mobile as you get older.

C'mon on up to Montgomery, AL.

I grew up in Montgomery. Left for good in 2007. Prattville or Wetumpka might be ok but Montgomery

Shelby co is pretty comfy

Not so much these days. Obviously if you're raising kids it's harder, but if you have them young and they're out the house while you're only 45 or so, I could see someone moving. Not to mention, all the 60 plus people that move away after they retire.

I moved to Biloxi last year.

It's Mississippi, so you're still in a broke-arse state with the wrong demographics, but everything is cheaper here.

I have a two bedroom apartment on the beach in a good area for under $700. Almost bought a move-in ready 2br house earlier this year for $85,000.

This isn't my final destination, but I'd stay here over moving anywhere in Louisiana.

This is my parents. Lived in Baton Rouge all their lives. I wouldn't be surprised if they sold the house at the end of the year and left the state.

If I remember correctly, LSU grads move to:

Houston
New Orleans
Atlanta
DFW

in that order

Same. My parents have lived in Baton Rouge for decades. Now that my sister and I have graduated and moved to other states, they have absolutely no reason to remain in Baton Rouge.

They're planning on selling their house and moving somewhere else at the end of the year. The problem they're having is deciding where to move - I've heard everything from Austin to Denver to Asheville. Very indecisive.

People who have lived in Louisiana their entire lives don't realize what a third world shite hole it is in so many ways.

Too many morons and too much crime.

Yeah, mine are pretty much the same way.

My older brother moved when I was a teenager and he's got the kids about 1500 miles away, then I moved last year. They've still got a few relatives in the BR area, but I've got a French name, and half my family has moved out of Louisiana in the last decade.

That's a big deal for people with a last name like mine to leave Louisiana forever.

I just couldn't imagine trying to raise a family in Baton Rouge or New Orleans with the way their politics are going.

Just don't move to the 3-1-8. That's the worst part of our state.
