re: A "Why isn't NOLA East bustling?" story that takes 35 paragraphs before mentioning "crime"

How was New orleans East in the 80s? Was it lily white? Black middle class?

When do the “leaders” of these communities say “let’s do what we can to lift ourselves up before putting blame on others”?
Blaming other is by far the easiest modus operandi. SWB would much rather make comments about the Chauvin verdict than address the hundreds upon hundreds of blacks killed by other blacks, north of Florida Boulevard, under her watch.

I worked in the East from 1987 to 1995. As you mentioned, there was federal money poured into section 8 housing subsidies starting in 1987. The area started to crumble within a year. Homes devalued quickly creating a cycle of short sells and cheap subsidized housing availability.
Does anyone recall the utter and complete corruption of NOPD, culminating in death sentences for officers Len Davis and Antoinette Frank in separate incidents that occurred in October '94 and March '95? The city was a freak show, and the 7th District covering the entire New Orleans East area, was as notoriously bad as any other.
I remember the East before then. It thrived from the 70's until the mid-80's.

I like that the advocate admits they make their website shitty to force people into paying and subscribing if they want to read anything.
No more popups and faster loading pages!!!

Section 8 killed the area, just decimated it, and it was fast with a speed that totally transformed the area in about 18 -24 months. I 'm sure that there were contributing factors like the oil bust and Martin Marietta but Section 8 was the catalyst.

Was a young kid at the time but heard that the feds had Babovich caught on tape and tried to give him immunity to testify against others including Gov Edwards. Wayne said no deal, pleaded guilty, did his time at low-security fed resort prison, got out, got his disbarment reversed and lives a pretty good life to this day.
I wonder what juice he had on others and what would have happened had he taken the deal?

Despite promises, New Orleans East still lacks economic engine of retail, dining. But why?
Lemme' take a shot at an answer. I'm going to guess "racism?"

Bennies is a name I had forgotten. I used to go there once a week during the summer for fishing lures and the like.
I met Bill Dance and Roland Martin there when I was a kid.
