A thought question for the board

From around 1935 or so until, let's say, 1944, Adolf Hitler was, if not the most powerful person the world (although it could be argued that he was), definitely the most important person. From the lead-up to World War 2 up until the disastrous setbacks on the Eastern Front that made a German loss inevitable, the world literally held its breath waiting to see what he would do next. Nations trembled at his approach, real or imagined.
Now, of course, in 1945 he met the most ignominious of ends. And for the purposes of this discussion, yes, he did die by his own hand in the bunker, and his body was burned in a shellhole so it wouldn't be captured and displayed by the Russians.
Ignore all of the evil things he did because those are not germane to this question. Would you take that trade? Would you want to be the most important, feared, talked-about person on earth for a decade if you knew that, shortly thereafter, you would come to a very, very bad end?

I'd rather be Truman or Churchill. In the books for saving the west.

Truman was also a huge reason for the cold war happening and gets way more credit for "saving" the war than he really did.
But anyway, to answer the OP, no

Many seem to be struggling with what I'm asking. Perhaps the fault is mine. Let me clarify. I'm not asking, "Would you want to be Adolf Hitler?" because that would be a stupid question. I'm asking, "Would you accept being the most important person in the world for a while if you knew it meant you would come to a horrible end?"

You need a better example than AH. No one wants to be AH.

Perhaps you're right. I did choose a poor example, but off hand I can't think of anyone else who really fits the bill. Napoleon is the closest historical corollary, and he really didn't come to that bad of an end.

I'll do it.

You worded your question poorly for your desired answer.
Maybe you should have just asked: Would you want to be the most important person in the world for 10 years with the knowledge that you would die at the 10 year mark?
Adding in Hitler gave the openning for alternate people.
To answer your question. No, i have no desire to be "important" in the publics eye and i surely dont want to die in 10 years.

Nope. I don't desire that much attention, nor do I wish to be feared by anyone.

No. I wouldn't want to be that important, known or talked about even if it was for good works.
Posted on 1/20/17 at 8:37 am to TheTideMustRoll
Not if it meant also being the most evil person on earth.
If I could be the guy that cures cancer or ends world hunger, then yeah, I'd sign up for that in a heartbeat.

Talk is cheap. Roosevelt and Truman handled it.

That's much more on Stalin than Truman.
"and gets way more credit for "saving" the war than he really did."
I don't know many people that think Truman saved the war; when Truman took office it was inevitable that the allies would win. He may have saved a lot of American (and Japanese) lives with dropping the bombs, though.

who in the hell would possibly take that trade?

Hell No. And here is why....
1. He was a vegetarian. frick that.
2. His idea of sex involved human fecal matter.
3. He spent his days in terrible abdominal pain and discomfort.
4. He was on a battery of drugs from his quack doctor to try and control his pain.
5. His body was slowly wasting away with what was probably parkinsons disease.
