A Question About Being In Prison & Shoes

I was watching "I Am A Killer" on Netflix and one of the inmates being interviewed had on a white pair of New Balance and it made me think.. Do they issue shoes to prisoners? Are prisoners responsible for getting their own shoes however they can? How does that work?

They are issued a pair of prison work boots. If they want to purchase other shoes they can from a pre approved list of options from an approved vendor.

In the case of the guy I was watching on "I Am A Killer", this guy had NO ONE. He has been in jail since he was 17 years old. His parents were drunks and never really dealt with him much.
He got on death row for killing someone in prison and has been there since 2012, around 2014 he had a cousin, who didn't know he was on death row, contact him. His cousin didn't really know him because he was too young at the time, but just out of the blue, up and decided to write him. So the guy has been in jail for 36 years, 20 years spent in CM. Up until his cousin decided to contact him, he had no one.

I watched a guy chew off the toes of a brand new pair of sneakers, in order to make 'flip flops' before he went in to Central lock up.

I don't make it a point to check out the type of shoes everyone I see, is wearing, but if I interact with people or see a shot on TV in which it is hard to avoid seeing the type of shoes someone has on... Sometimes it's unavoidable.

Probably a lot like your shoes.
They don’t get a whole a lot of use so they can last a lifetime and always look clean and new.

Got a pair of white new Ballance when I got to boot camp. I'd say that is equivalent to prison, so I'd have to say yeah.

They issues shoes. Think it varies by facility.
I have seen some facilities that have new balance white shoes, some do white vans, white/orange Crocs etc.
