Southern New Hampshire University has replaced an online adjunct professor who initially failed a student’s assignment because the professor thought Australia wasn’t a country.

An email exchange between the student, a 27-year-old stay-at-home mother in Idaho completing a degree at SNHU in sociology, and the professor was revealed in a Buzzfeed story Thursday and went viral.

Ashley Arnold was working on an assignment to compare American social norms to that of another country. She chose social media use in Australia but earned a zero for a portion of the project’s grading rubric because the professor believed Arnold didn’t select a country.

Technically, Australia isn't a country. It's the Aborigine native homeland and it was stolen and raped by Western Invaders.

I'm sure SNHU hasn't let their educational mission get left behind in their massive push for online students

What is the average American worse at answering? Questions about basic geography? Questions about basic American history and government?

Lack of knowledge about Government and Geography is rampant among your average American citizens. Government leads the lack of knowledge scenario followed by Geography IMHO.

I had a geography teacher in 9th Grade who was also the baseball coach and was an idiot. I’m confident almost every student knew more about geography than he did. He started off one class saying this:

“This unit we’re going to be studying the country of Africa”
“...Coach, Africa is a continent.”
“Well you’re right in saying that, but like Australia, it’s also a country.”

He would then argue with us saying they would never name a country South Africa. In a different class, he was also apparently arguing with some of the students that New York City was the Capitol of New York. He was a very nice guy, but an idiot and had no business teaching anything except for baseball (which to be fair he was a good baseball coach).

Same, except mine was only there to coach cheerleaders. Ive been a fan of other cultures and traveling since I was a little kid so I basically taught her geography. She didn't like me much.
