The History of English podcast

Ever wonder where the words and phrases we use come from? And the history behind them? Then this is the podcast for you.

The presenter eloquently goes over the evolution of the English language from it’s roots in proto-Indo European, to old English, and how Norse (from the Viking invasions) and French (from the Normand conquest) shaped its formation. It’s an interesting history lesson and a college level course in etymology all rolled into one. Chock full of interesting tidbits.

Like how all languages first developed words for color words.

All languages first develop words for black and white. Then red. Then green or yellow, then blue, followed by brown and the other colors. And gives the reasoning for this development couched in the lessons of history.

It isn’t a boring, droning lesson either. He intersperses the language lessons with the historical occurrences and it flows effortlessly.

From the spellings, to the way pronunciation changed, to the turns of phrase we use every day. Truly fascinating and enjoyable for anyone who enjoys learning.

Damn, get out of my head. I was just thinking of this on the way into work this morning. Writing or reading (working on reading) I suck at. However, knowing the origins of words....I'm game.

You’ll be amazed at the number of cognates for the words we use. And then further amazed by the words you’d think would be cognates, but actually have completely different roots. The topic is absolutely fascinating.

There’s also a fascinating Great Courses lecture by John McWhorter that I highly recommend. Not free though.

Black and white are all I see, in my infancy. Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me, let me see.

Ahhhhhh...yes.

Black and white...
Light and dark...
Glow of the fire,
Promethean Spark,
Danger in darkness,
Dead of the night,
Moon stares upon us,
Lidless and white,
Red comes next,
From the wound comes a flood,
Life giving color,
Crimson is blood,
Green is things sprouting,
Out of the soil,
Nourishing blooming,
Tendrils uncoil,
Yellow is belching,
Rays from the sun,
Banishing darkness,
‘Til day is done,
Rivers and oceans,
Shimmering blue,
Fish from the waters,
Life from the hue,
Soil and earth,
Of the shade we call brown,
Life from the loam,
From where green Things are grown,
Fire and water,
Our sons and daughters,’
Sun and the fire we can name,
Blue is the river,
Green is the giver,
Red is the blood from our veins,
And As we learn,
We will yearn,
To call out these colors bright,
‘Til their names are many,
But in the beginning,
We only knew black and white.

It is super interesting. My degree is in English, and I enjoyed the linguistics courses more than any other in the program.

I always found my English courses to be lackluster. I recall getting points off on a paper because my language was “archaic”.

Perhaps if I had pursued higher level stuff I would have been more challenged, but I found that the best teacher is curiosity. I was a voracious reader and looked up any words I didn’t comprehend from an early age. And now, with the wealth of all collected knowledge at our fingertips in an instant, I find language deteriorating more than ever.
Truly a pity.

I could have my own sterling podcast on this subject.

English is my native lingua, however I am, after all, quite the cunning linguist when it cums to the international female love talk communication speak clever thingy.

Srsly-I’ve been a fan of this for a while, thanks for the bump.
