It's plausible the pilot(s) communicated their issue as they were dealing with it.
They very well may have reported engine and control problems. What they may not have known was that a missile just went through their wing.

Trudeau will not let this slide.

Yeah, I am sure military operations are being prepared.

The Canadians will no doubt blame us.

Iranians say they won't share the black box with Boeing.

That is pretty much an admission of guilt, ISO.
If this crash was due to mechanical failure, there are zero negatives to sharing it with Boeing.

Not sure what would cause the fire in the air though.
Engines fires happen frequently enough.

Damn near 100% of the time a missile hits one

Oh I believe it was a missile. I'm just responding to the guy that says he can't think of what else would be on fire and there's an obvious answer.

BBC says plane passed its technical inspection just 3 days ago
If this was really the result of a technical issue, then there's something really fricked up with these airplane inspections.

There is no excuse you can give to make that incident right. We lied through our teeth about it. We lied about it descending on a bombing run when it was really ascending in a normal flight path. It was squawking as a civilian and most of the times they were hailed it was on a frequency they could not receive. Our ship was in their waters and the airliner was still over Iranian airspace. We f***ed up hard there.
In no way did I say it was right or that we didn't frick up. Nor was I making excuses. I was simply saying that the comparisons between the two aren't similar at all.

Not saying it wasn't an Iranian SAM but 737's with CFM 56 engines have had numerous issues with engine failures. Turbine blades have been snapping as they transit through 30-35K feet during initial climb. This could easily cause an uncontained failure which sends pieces of blades through the engine cutting fuel lines and starting a fire.
That said, the fragmentation of the warhead on a SA-9/SA-13 would have the same effect.

I bet the great royal Canadian forces are spinning up as we speak.

Yeah I'm never flying a plane over the middle east in my lifetime
I go to India every other year or so and I do MSY-LHR-BLR. I woke up on the LHR-BLR after a few hours of napping and we were directly over Iran. I know we were ~40k feet but I had a bit of nervousness for that one.

Flying over warzones should be prohibited
The US shot down an Iranian passenger aircraft thinking it was a threat back in the 80's during the Iran-Iraq war
I'm willing to bet this was an unintentional shootdown
Russia shot down a passenger aircraft in the Ukraine
North Korea shot down a passenger aircraft as well
