Get a rabies shot immediately. One of my friends son died of a bat bite after Katrina
quote:I know of this tragic case.
expound please. what exactly did he die from? rabies? something else?
The young man dies from complications due to being infected with rabies from a bat bite. Within about 10 days as I recall. The medical folks treating the subject did not suspect rabies as a cause until it was too late.
It’s extremely rare in addition to being a tragedy.

One of my clients is a prominent virus expert, and told me to be sure the bat is tested.
Shouldn’t you post this on the Help Board?

Very sad case, he picked up what he thought was a dead bat in the debris of the aftermath of Katrina in BSL and it bite him.
Ive read the CDC write up on that case (its out there online). Seems like he had multiple potential exposures:
"owever, after the child's death, several persons reported that bats were commonly seen outside the home. On two occasions, dead bats also were discovered inside the home and attached garage, and a live bat was caught in an apartment above the garage during the summer of 2005. The child had removed a live bat from his bedroom and released it outdoors in the spring of 2005.
The child had attended a summer camp in Alabama for several weeks in July. The camp program included an overnight stay in a nearby cavern used for tours and special events. Interviews with the camp director and parents of children who attended the overnight camp-out with the patient revealed no indication of direct contact with bats at the camp or in the cavern, although one bat was reportedly observed clinging to the rocky wall inside the cavern."

You're in the ER right now, correct?

Congrats, you have rabies

Have they told you the costs yet? Friend of mine had to about 12 years ago and it was about $2500.

I would personally get the shots and not wait on the testing.
The vaccine is no longer intraperitoneal so it doesn't hurt like the old days.

didn't bit me but they said any saliva contact could get rabies. Had to get all the rabies shots
Happened to mention to my vet one day that there was a raccoon that would come onto my back porch and eat cat food out of the cat’s bowl. He was incredulous and asked me why I would allow this. Told me to never leave cat or dog food bowl outside. He said he had a friend from college who contracted rabies from a similar situation. Some infected animal ate out of the bowl and he didn’t know it and handled the bowl. Pointed out that if some animal bites you that you know there is a chance you are exposed to rabies. Saliva on a pet bowl is a different story. By the time you figure out something is wrong it is too late. There is no cure for rabies once symptoms start.

Have you had your latest Covid booster? You don’t want rabies and a cold

You or expert needs to closely inspect your property. They may be getting into your attic. The only need a crack of about 1/2 inch. Start by checking near where you saw the bat.

I didn't think we had vampire bats in North America m
Pennsylvania is sure to have tons of them around.

The family was from BSL but that's not where the bite happened. It happened at a summer camp in North Alabama. They did an overnight camp out in a cave. Camp tradition for decades. Never a problem. They suspect that's where the bite happened but they don't know for sure.
It was a full year after Katrina when he passed. October 1st.

Sorry to hear, Chinhoyang. I just went through this ordeal a couple weeks ago. Juts got my last shot this past Friday. See my thread HERE. Prepare your butthole for the costs of the shots. The third shot hit me hardest from a side effect standpoint. Knocked me on my arse for a day.
ETA: But for real. Don't frick around. Go start the shots now. Rabies ain't no joke. 100% guaranteed horrible death.

I’ve never been bit by a bat, but yes.

My health insurance out of pocket has been met for the year, thankfully.
