A/C won't turn off. WTF?

My A/C won't turn off. I turned it up to 78° and it did nothing. Went up to 81°. Still on. Even turned it off and it's still running.
What the heck is wrong? How much does this cost?

Maybe it's just really hot in your house

Flip the breaker.

Talk about your first world problems.
Boohoo, my house is too damn comfortable.

could be a faulty thermostat

I just flipped it. The unit isn't running. It's weird. It's cool in the house.

Mine did this last year and there was some sort of short in the thermostat if I remember correctly to where it couldn't communicate with the unit to actually turn off. Should be a cheap fix

If its the fan blowing inside, but not the outside condenser, then the fan relay is stuck.
If the fan inside is not blowing, but the condenser outside is running, then the contacts are stuck in the condenser.
If both are running and you moved the temperature set point above in cooling mode above the current temperature, you probably have a bad thermostat.
Of course, any of the above could be caused by house AIDS, so IDK what to tell you....

either a bad thermostat or you have a shorted out control wire

Check to see if the fan is turned on

See if your thermostat has batteries. I called out my a/c guy twice forgetting about batteries in the thermostat.

Came to say this. Every time mine does that I change the batteries, reset it and it goes back to normal.

check your filter. if it is clogged up enough, it can trip a switch that makes the fan run continuously. unplug the unit in the attic for an hour? and see if it starts back ok.
look at the control panel on the blower in the attic, and see if there is a light blinking. the pattern of the blink will tell you what the problem is. (you may have to google your brand to get the fault code for the sequence of blinks.)

If your system is turned off but the unit outside is still running the contactors are probably welded together. Happened to me a couple months ago. Technician fixed it in about 5 minutes.

Most critical thing is that you don't want the compressor running outside when the fan inside is off. If this is the case, pull the disconnect outside and call for service. Likely compressor contractor stuck.

is the A/C on or is the fan just running while the compressor is cycling on and off. I had the control board go out on my a few years ago and the fan would never turn off.
Turn the T-Stat to of, Go the the electrical panel, flip the A/C (indoor) breaker, wait about 20 seconds then flip it back on. fan should not come back on. Then switch the stat back to on and lower the temp till the unit comes on. see if the unit (fan) cycles off. if not sounds like a control panel issue.. call your favorite A/C tech...
