Amazing how they've rebuilt into an almost utopian society.

Except they have like the highest suicide rate ever, work themselves to literal death and yet still have economic problems.

A ground war on mainland Japan would’ve been a long, drawn out bloody affair.

The bombs were the right call.

How fitting that China is now shooting missiles over Taiwan and into Japanese airspace.

Guess things don't really change...

And they rebuilt both cities even better, like a month after bombs were dropped.

It’s weird how the major newspaper headlines call the Japanese “Japs”

This. Military planners were estimating 6-7 figures of casualties before the entire mainland was secured/cleared

That is quite a broad range of estimates. Could be 100,000, could be 9,999,999. Give or take a few 10 mill. Lol.

they've rebuilt
—-“they’ve” included: The US wrote a republican constitution and told them “do this”, the US poured billions of $ into Japan and rebuilt their cities, factories, roads, etc etc, the US let their Emperor live and pretended he had nothing to do with war planning to help the society transition, the US military has defended Japan since 1945, allowing them to spend money in other areas.

In hindsight it’s easy to say “how could the Japanese not surrender with the threat of an atom bomb?”

But in reality they probably heard that threat and were laughing and saying “oh yeah sure. A bomb that will level an entire city! Good luck with that!!!”

aug 6th Hiroshima bomb. Aug 8 the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. Aug 9th the soviets invaded Japanese held Manchukuo. Hours later Nagasaki bombed. Aug 15th Japanese emperor announces surrender against the wishes of much of the military leaders. Even in the face of 2 destroyed cities and the Soviet invasion it took another week to surrender. An invasion of the Japanese mainland would have been a bloodbath that would have made Okinawa look like a picnic
