MacArthur returned to the Philippines.
It was a very controversial campaign that Chester Nimitz, MacArthur's counterpart in the Central Pacific, thought was a huge waste of time, manpower, and resources. Nevertheless, after being unceremoniously expelled from the Philippines in early-1942, MacArthur had vowed to return to the islands as a liberator. And on October 20, 1944, an Allied force comprised mostly of U.S. Army personnel, landed on the island of Leyte. The campaign to retake the Philippines would continue until the very day the Japanese surrendered to the Allies in Tokyo Bay.

A lot of characters intersected in the Philippines/Leyte Gulf: Nimitz, McArthur, Kinkaid, Halsey, and Ernest King. And that was just on our side.

That picture was staged. He came assure in a boat then went back and "landed" again in a landing craft with cameras ready!
He was very overrated. He did well in Korea then he ignored warning from DC not to push too close to China in NK. Then hundreds of thousands of Chicoms mauled our troops all the way down to the current DMZ.
He also blew the defense of the Philippines at the beginning of WWII. Had all of his planes sitting on the tarmac when the Japanese attached.
I think net effect we would have been better off without him.

And had the Japanese generals who kicked his arse executed for 'war crimes'.

Bottomline: we go to the Philippines because Douglas was threatening to run as a republican against FDR

He didn't oppose the MOH for Wainwright in 1945, just in 1942. He was still a little upset about Corregidor.
You know that meeting he had after Wainwright was released changed Mac forever, right? Mac insisted he be right next to him when he received the Japanese surrender.

I read where MacArthur was upset with the atomic bombs in Japan, because he wanted the glory of invading with his troops.

In his defense, he was given a direct order by the Commander-in-Chief of the United States military to do just that.
I believe MacArthur thought it possible to organize a rescue operation to relieve his army fighting in the Philippines. That's why he was so appalled and angry when Wainwright surrendered his entire command to the Japanese.

For me, his conduct in Korea really tarnishes him. He was out of control.

MacArthur has always had his fair share of detractors. He made some questionable command decisions as any commander is want to do.

I've read in 2 separate books about DugOut Doug that the Navy pilot of the landing craft hated him and deliberately landed the LC in a different area of the beach that was different than planned, to make him walk through the surf to get to the beach. As pilot /captain of a Navy craft, he was absolute commander and no one could order him to land in the planned area which had a dock. And there are many reasons why the soldiers abandoned behind gave him that nickname; he was hated by many / most.

My father served most of the war in the Philippines. He DID NOT care for MacArthur. At all.
