Drinking out a hose pipe.

In the 70s and 80s we called it a water hose. Even today, I've only heard British people call a water hose a hose pipe.

We used to walk to that Kmart using drainage ditches etc from Goodwood to make the mixup drinks in the self service thing you are talking about in the 70s. It took forever but was worth it.

Did any of you ever swim in that old highway pond with all the alligators in goodwood. It had a swing rope etc in the 70s.

It was man made dug out for highway construction and had a swing rope etc, but also was infested with gators. They would typically stay at other side away from the rope swing but you had to keep an eye on them. Was maybe a 3-5 acre pond max. It was hidden in early 70s by woods etc. I can’t remember exactly where it was but we biked to it so it must have been there somewhere

The hose pipe is not the water hose. You could drink out of the hose, or the hose pipe (water spigot) if there were no hose attached. Then again, we were uncouth heathens and referred to any type of drinking outside drinking from the hose pipe.

Not only that but until the late 70's, ESPN and cable still didn't exist and there were only a handful of channels to watch. Therefore, an LSU game being on TV was a MAJOR event.

Every summer, Pop took us on an RV trip. More than once, there was no planned route or destination. "We'll know when we get there."

If you grew up in New Orleans, Channel 8 had the Japanese monster movies on Sunday morning. "Their lips aren't moving like they're talking."

This thread is a perfect illustration of how far we’ve fallen as a society.

In all honesty and I loath to say it, but the same generation (I’m born in 1960, so I consider myself in this cohort) who enjoyed these freedoms also must bear at least some responsibility -or at least introspection- for where we are now.

Speaking for myself, I think I was asleep at the wheel.

Dadgum, how did we get to this ‘woke’ bullshite moment?!?…

Sitting in the dark on Saturday nights with my Dad listening to LSU football on the radio.

If someone was bullying you, your parents would tell you to go kick his arse. So you went and kicked his arse and the whole community was okay with it. And the bullying stopped.

Having to stand up to turn the dial on the tv if you wanted to change the channel.

Milk being delivered to the house.

The only snack at a gas station was a coke machine that had glass bottles. Extra points if the bottles were the short fat ones.

my grandma making me drive her around in her LTD when I was 13.

playing on the roof of our house - got up there by climbing up the back of the station wagon roof.

sitting in the classroom counting out loud the number of "licks" someone was getting in the hallway from the teacher using the big wooden paddle they all kept in their desk drawer. laughing when the kid would come back in and couldn't sit down.

running endless suicides in the school gym until you thought you would puke for basketball practice.

jumping out of the huge swings at recess even though countless others had broken their arms doing so.

So many fond memories in this post. I was born in 1963 so this thread is amazing.

Here is one that I don't see:

Leaving the doors and windows open and unlocked.

Had a kid constantly being an a-hole to my little boy. I told him to walk straight up to him and punch him in the face. He complied, and the little "badass" started crying. Needless to say he was so embarrassed about getting his arse kicked in front of others and then crying, that he started leaving my boy alone. My son got detention, but I was so freaking proud of him. THAT...ladies and gentlemen, is how you do it. That's how we did it when I was young.

The other boy's parents have two kids and both are as involved as ours are in just about everything, so when we see them they just glare at us now like they're expecting us to go apologize. Man frick that.

I remember having this talk with my dad. I then practiced by fighting the clothes hanging in my closet. The dude ended up backing down.

To be honest, this one still amazes me…was watching Die Hard (1988) and people were still lighting up in that recycled air.
