My commute is 35 miles each way. I bought a new 2009 Nissan Altima and it has been great. 180,000 miles on it an no major issues so far. I average 26 MPH, so I fill up about once a week.

Any scion with the 1.5.

I'm getting a 2 door yaris manual soon. Something 10years old or so is around 3500 bucks.

Until then, 82 mile commute in a 15 year old 4x4 on 35s giving 15 mpg

But... It's dead nuts reliable, insurance is cheap, and obviously it's paid off. 300 bucks a month in gas ain't bad at all.

This is the best advice.

I'm lucky in that I have a company vehicle. 31 miles each way. I had a VW Passat and it was a great car. I opted for a WRX last year for the fun factor.......was looking at the Genesis 5.0, but the deal was just too steep. While I still love the WRX and I drive like an a-hole, I will look to the Genesis or similar in two years.

Acura TL was a prudent luxury/efficient option.

The new civics are as big as the previous model accords. Picked one up in November. Averaging 41 mph. 90% hwy. I looked at the hybrid accord but the break even point for the premium of the hybrid price was not there. OP, test drive a civic if you are checking out the accords and decide if there is enough difference to justify the higher price.

Something cheap with good gas mileage. Even if you buy new, your warranty will be gone within a year or two. I'd look into something like a new civic/accord/etc. As was already stated, a TDI would have been a great option a couple years back, but not anymore.

I drive about 110 miles round trip five days a week(which will soon be only 4, thankfully). It was terrible for the first few days, but at this point it just feels normal.

I used to do a 110 mile trip. My advice on what to get, a tank. fricking idiots out there with you on the roads are crazy. You need something to protect yourself.

This. I drive 125 miles per day to work and back. Drive a 2003 Ford Explorer. Get about 20 mpg but I take care of it really well and feel protected. I see dumbasses daily that can cause wrecks. Been run off the road once in the rain and flipped down the median doing 70 mph. Walked away with a shoulder bruise from the seat belt. Can't imagine how bad it would have been had I been in a small car.

2. Whatever comes with a Home's closer to your current job.

4. Toyota Camry

Just jumping in on the tank comments: go ahead and YouTube small overlap crash tests. Many vehicles considered to be 'tanks' have some of the worst ratings in this area.

One thing I liked about the VW. The cabins were built very well. Lots of pics can be found of totaled Jettas with cabin looking like it was barely touched. Plus, I feel much better driving my car compared to my Tahoe on the interstate with heavy traffic. A lot more maneuverable. Yes, the damage would be higher if I got in an accident, but I don't feel unsafe.

VWs tend to do very well on those small overlap tests. It really is a shame that VW flubbed it's diesel department so badly. A TDI would have for sure been my next purchase.

I 2nd the Altima. I'm at 190k miles on an 08 that I bought new. No major issues and average almost 28 mpg on 70 mi round trip (Mandeville - kenner). No sense buying something real nice since you'll ruin it within a couple years anyway.

Tesla!

Trust me, I've owned everything south of maybachs....

Tesla is the rocket ship.

there is nothing else for me anymore.

even the base models will get you 200 miles a day, no sweat for that 70 mile commute..
