Like the Subie Forester suggestion if you need decent sized reliable crossover with great mpg.....if you want car with good mpg, heard that new Chevy Cruz Diesel gets over 50mpg on HWY! I'm no fan of GM vehicles but if you need an appliance just for commuting. Might be interesting.

I commuted 1300+ miles a week for a year a bought a Ford Fusion for it. Comfortable, good gas and very quiet.
