we can't retrofit any city to handle that kind of insane rain in such a short period.

If they put a check valve where Bayou Manchac stops at the Mississippi River levee, then Manchac could drain into the Mississippi if it starts nearing flood stage.

That's because everyone's internet and phones went out when Baton Rouge flooded on Sunday August 14th. The 14th was the peak of the flood.

supernovasky was the hero in that original thread.

The post that started it all: First backwater flooding post

That guy honestly probably saved so e lives with his posts. Also hasn't posted in years

Wanted to bump the mention of Supernovasky. Dude truly provided a service with his clear explanation and warning about what would happen.
He should def be in the TD poster hall of fame.
Not least because of the way he disappeared from posting not long after.

I know I'm not the only one who read his name as super-no-vas-skee. I did it again when I saw it in this thread. I remember seeing someone else mention the same thing a while back.

The 15th was when we left our house in a boat. That day will be seared into my mind forever.

I will stick by what I said earlier. BR won't get near 10-15 inches of rain
PJ was right for a change. We did not get near 10-15"

I bet you took that govt money though like all the rest

I don’t know anyone who got that govt money. We all applied to the Restore LA or whatever but if it lined someone’s pockets, nobody i know will admit to getting any. I sure didn’t.

Thanks to this site, got much. needed help gutting the house before it was too late.

Crazy it has been that long. I’ve wondered how your mom and step dad did with the recovery.

Edit: what was surreal about that event was how one half of town was untouched and people going about life and half the town was wiped out. It was weird driving back and forth between the two sides seeing such a difference for weeks/ months.

Was anybody in central by magnolia bridge? The amite and comite both swelled beyond belief and submerged my dads place.

It was during Trumps campaign. He and ...Pence visited first Baptist Church right around the corner for the relief effort. Hillary wasnt about to dirty her shoes down here.

Denham flooded the 13th, with our house going under at like 9 at night. I had Sprint so my phone was one of the only that worked.

I remember Hanny asking where Jim Hawthorne was on social media. he was really worried, scared even, about his safety. I know his daughter so got in touch with her, we were able to reassure Sir Charles ;-). A lot of moments like that thanks to ATT site going out.

Lots of similarities to my story. We are north of Denham close to the river as the crow flies. Not in a flood zone. Did not flood in the area in 83. We were watching closely and put furniture up on blocks Friday night, expecting to have Saturday to prepare further. At 6 am Saturday 8/13 I looked out the front window…nothing but a few puddles and water in the ditch. Just raining. At 8 am the water was halfway up the front yard and rising fast. Couldnt get cars out. Through providence, good samaritans, and some foolhardiness, we got out, got picked up by my inlaws and fled to Highland Road right before the interstate closed. Could not get to my elderly parents north of me in Watson but they were fine. We had about a foot of water. The front of our subdivision had four feet. The other side of the highway in front of our subdivision had 12. We were living in our driveway for three months, and were one of the first families back in our house. We did get government money. Used it all to replace walls and floors and such. I will never be without flood insurance.

I am on the Denham side near Magnolia Bridge. It got worse the further you went west, definitely.

Low spot on our gravel road used to flood with a normal rain. It would get maybe 12 inches deep.

I got home from work that tuesday and drove on in. My xterra at the time was lifted, on 35s, and snorkled. I got so much gravel dust in the alternator it killed it.

Realized the next day the water was a littke over 42inches deep on the road
