I usually do 9 and 3 with my hands/wrists through the holes in the wheel and kinda just resting on top of it. I'm definitely going to break my arms if the airbag deploys

Yep. Also 10 and 2 is better stability when you have one hand off the wheel (e.g., manual gear shifting).
