If you're in the south then 200k is certainly upper class. Middle class families may take a vacation once or twice a year at most. I would probably draw the line at 130k combined for entry to the upper class.

130k in New Orleans proper isn't upper class. Maybe in Abbeville

ETA: the point being, "the South" is too broad of a term.

I did the math on the other page. Factoring in other events you can still have pretty much 5k left over a month or 60k a year. You can invest 80% of that and still have 10k left over in the savings.....

50K * 30 years = 1.5 million with flat comp...

200k as a family gets you a nice house, maybe a low end luxury car (as in bmw/lexus/maybe a Mercedes....maybe). But it's not getting you some extravagant lifestyle. I don't see it as upper class.

We're DINKS and are going to pull in a nice amount over that this year, and I certainly don't feel like I'm upper class.

I don't think it is race that will be the primary issue in this country in the coming years...it will be class.

That's how it should be already, tbh. Only simple/racist people get hung up on ethnicity.

Sure it is.

Just because the dollar doesn't stretch as far in New Orleans compared to small town South doesn't mean it isn't still upper class. There's just a difference in what upper class will get you from place to place.

There's also a big difference in what $130k will get you in San Francisco compared to NOLA, but it's still upper class either way.

ETA: I think if you want to get technical it would be upper middle class, but $130k annually is still well within the top 10% nationwide.

No way someone can live an upper middle class lifestyle in the city at 130k.

You could probably do it but you aren't taking good vacations, drive nice cars, etc.

eta: with a family of four or five.

this is too complicated an equation to compare directly and expect to end up with a valid comparison. you can nit pick those statistics to "prove" either side of the story.

The median household income in this country is in the low 50's. Middle class is around there.

Folks in six fingered arguing they are not upper class is basically saying 90 percent of people are middle class which defeats the purpose of classification
