You don't have to eat at the buffet at all on a cruise if you don't want to, and it doesn't cost any extra to avoid it.

Even at the buffet areas on a cruise, there's usually a person behind the glass serving you. Its not just a free for all with food sitting out like OP is leading people to believe.

Too many people crowding around the food.
It's not necessarily that the food is ill-prepared or that the buffet is dirty, but how do you know where all those people have been?

I went on one 3 years ago and they had a crew member dispensing hand sanitizer to everyone entering the restaurants. It was mandatory. No illness as far as I know and the food was a hell of a lot better than golden corral. The food really isn't the point. We got to see Dominica, Grenada, Tobago, and Barbados as well as a day at a beach resort in San Juan for about half the cost of flying to Costa Rica and driving ourselves around the country (just did that). Sure, Costa Rica was better but I'm not sure about 2x better. And if you don't want to be herded like sheep just don't buy the packages from the cruise line. Do a little research and find local options at the port. Not that hard. And do a little research on the cruise line. You couldn't pay me to take Carnival or Disney but there are plenty of other options.

I didn't know cruise ships went all the way to the port of Houston. I also didn't realize Golden Corral had a cruise ship. I hope Popeyes gets a cruise line soon. They could sail out da parish.
