I make around 300,000 to 400,000 a year. I have almost 750k to put down...... I should only get a 600k house......?

Yep. Several colleagues in my field make double and triple what you make and aren't buying million dollar primary homes.
You could buy a small condo in the mountains or the down in Costa Rica in addition to 600-900k house. That's what I would do if I only made 300-400k.
This is a pretty decent home for 700k in Baton Rouge. No idea of the location.
