It still surprises me how people freak out over hearing a sonic boom. I guess it's understandable, but hearing them was common for us growing up.

You very rarely heard a sonic boom if ever. The jets only go super when they are far from base over water or very high if utilizing above land airspace.

This. Maybe things have changed since I was a kid, but unless the airfield was really close to the operational airspace I can’t think of a reason why a pilot would be above the mach over the airfield. I lived on AFBs for the first decade of my life and rarely heard them.
Not saying there isn’t a good reason because I’m clearly not a pilot, just can’t think of one.

I hear it all the time. Especially when at the beach and jets go by. People think they are super sonic because it doesn’t get loud until after the jets have passed.
