I went to that same page. Those hub & spoke wheels look nothing like the circle of billiard balls on the page we have.

Logical thinking would tell us that this is related to what the students have been learning in class this week. Why don't you ask your kid what this means? Unless they weren't paying attention, in which case they deserve to fail the assignment.

If there are no instructions on the sheet then there is no assignment.

And for those levying backhanded and thinly veiled insults against those that don't like 'common core', you should get a clue on this and understand what people are saying is that the education system in the US is garbage. If you don't like that because perhaps you're in the education system and feel it suggests that you are garbage, then do a better job. If you are prevented from doing better because of the system, then leave the system. Our kids and our nation would be better off for the education system to completely collapse, forcing us to find a better solution, than to allow it to continue churning out graduates who've been poorly taught and continually drag the collective education level of the nation downward.

Wrong.

People against common core are the ones arguing that the old, broken way is better, cause that's how they learned.

And they can't grasp the simple concept that common core is not a method. Nor does it promote a method.

No, you are wrong. And, of course it's the veiled "you are stupid" comments saying people can't grasp this or grasp that. It's a tired mantra and full of fallacies, essentially claiming people won't get on the train of progress, yet it provides no evidence of progress made or progress likely.

Education here in the US sucks. You can call it 'new' or Common Core or anything you want. 'Common Core' is simply the symbolic phrase people use now. If you applied any degree of effort and critical thinking you'd see that. But I don't expect critical thinking from anyone defending the status quo or any part of the current education system.

And before blasting people about their affection for 'the old ways', you may want to reconcile how those people and their old ways were ranked considerably higher than what's coming through the system today.

The Common Core was developed by building on the best state standards in the United States; examining the expectations of other high-performing countries around the world; and carefully studying the research and literature available on what students need to know and be able to do to be successful in college, career, and life. No state was asked to lower their expectations for students in adopting the Common Core. The evidence-based standards were developed in consultation with teachers and parents from across the country, so they are also realistic and practical for the classroom.

Educational standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Education standards, like Common Core are not a curriculum. Local communities and educators choose their own curriculum, which is a detailed plan for day to day teaching. In other words, the Common Core is what students need to know and be able to do, and curriculum is how students will learn it. The Common Core State Standards are educational standards for English language arts (ELA)/literacy and mathematics in grades K-12. Please click here to read the ELA Common Core State Standards and click here to read the mathematics standards.

Have you researched common core at all? The standards are very basic, like kindergarteners need to be able to count to 100. Nothing further as to how this should be taught

i'm a teacher ... agree with just about everything in the post ... esp the first sentence ... basic instructions shouldn't have to be googled ...

It says "addition in a circle". My guess would be to add the two numbers that are next to each other. In other words put a 3 between the 1 & 2; put a 5 b/t 2 & 3, etc. I don't have a 2nd grader, but would that be in line with what they are learning?

Really? Only one reason to be against Common Core?

The Stanford Math Professor who served on the CC math validation committee also had reservations:

Dear Diane, In
your own writings you mention that the biggest issue with Core
Standards is the lack of evidence. This is largely true. But at
least in math there is significant international evidence that
major parts of the standards will not work
.

But anyone who does not like CC or dares to say it does not really raise the bar are just dumb folks who know nothing about CC or math.

Common Core has nothing to do with methods.

Why can't you people figure this out? Are you purposely being obtuse?

it's different and scary and they can't understand it.

nevermind that its clearly a superior method of teaching.
