I recall L.A. mayor Tom Bradley giving a press conference where (in the manner of Antony at Caesar's funeral) he technically urged peace while seeming to encourage rioting.
Anyone else recall that? I wonder if it's on YT.

I was living in Long Beach at the time. It was tense. The blacks and Koreans were pretty much at war with each other. I remember going up to Signal Hill to see the fires burning. Watched several C-130's land at Long Beach airpot and offload a bunch of gear. Had to go to north L.A. a few day after and there were Humvee's with .50 cal's all over the place.

Gotcha. I always wondered.
I assume he thought someone was trying to tell him something.

Wasn't there a curfew in Long Beach? I remember some white guys riding a motorcycle were killed on pch.

I remember bad shite happening and the cops did nearly nothing about any of it.
I remember thinking in the state of cal. so I wasn't surprised.
What I remember most is people burning down their own neighborhoods. The massive size of destruction still amazes me. Absolutely no justification for this kind of behavior. Civilized people don't do such things.

Was an Army lieutenant at the time, on my first duty assignment, stationed in Hawaii. Most vivid memories were the beating of Reginald Denny and Rodney King begging "Can't we all just get along?"

I was 33 and living in Dallas. All I remember is what was shown on CNN. I had a buddy living in Simi Valley. Was worried the rioters might go burn him down.

The Lakers and Clippers were both in the playoffs at the time. Lakers moved their game 4 vs Phoenix to T&M in Las Vegas; Clippers played their game 4 vs Utah at the small Anaheim Convention Center.

Gary Williams pleaded guilty to charges of robbery and assault in the spring of 1993 and was sentenced to three years in jail.
On Thursday, August 19, Deputy District Attorney Lawrence Morrison delivered the opening statement. A week later, the videotape of the beating was shown. The doctors who treated Denny testified, describing his wounds and their efforts to repair them. Next to testify were witnesses of the beating. The defense was denied direct contact with the witnesses to protect their identities. In late August, Denny's rescuers testified for the prosecution. The prosecution rested on September 17, 1993. The defense began pleading on September 20, making a case for unpremeditated assault. Faal began by challenging the video evidence and portrayed Williams as a victim of poverty and racism. He and Broadly tried to humanize their clients. In the closing arguments, the defense attorneys claimed that Williams and Watson were being used as scapegoats for the L.A. riots. The prosecution counter-argued that the two had knowingly tried to kill Denny and were not victims.
After a few jury changes, a hung jury resulted for all charges except a felony count of mayhem for Williams and one misdemeanor assault charge for both Williams and Watson on October 18. Watson was given credit for time served and was released on probation. Williams was denied bail and sentenced to a maximum of ten years on December 7, 1993. As the families of the defendants celebrated the lesser sentences, Denny surprisingly approached Williams' mother, Georgina, and hugged her. For weeks afterwards, public debate about racism and whether the verdicts were just or unjust raged on.[10]

His speech from the previous night virtually greenlighted the violence and the looting in LA. I wish someone had the copy

Wasn't this about the time Maxine Waters made her 'No justice, no peace" remarks?

I remember watching the Reginald Denny beating. I never understood why he just didn't keep his truck rolling through that intersection instead of stopping.
