Serious question: what's a reasonable worst case scenario if someone gets a hold of your DNA? Find and monetize a cure for cancer from your super unique DNA, that would have never been discovered otherwise, and cut you out? So what
Then just publish your DNA and DNA relatives profile to the web. I mean so what.
Then post a link to it here on TD.

And what bad would happen to you?
You could find out you have a kid you didn’t know you had and/or some kid from across the country could find out who his or her father is and come ruin your life.

Use it to diagnose a preventable future terminal illness you will almost certainly contract, but only disclose the particulars to you for a (large) fee ?

But in this hypothetical, for that diagnosis to be of value, it means they would be the only ones who caught it.
So, that leaves me with two options:
1. My DNA didn't get leaked, I wouldn't get the diagnosis (or would get it much later), and be adversely affected.
2. Because my DNA is leaked, some horrible diagnosis was made early. I then get to choose whether it's financially worth it to me to pay to receive it. If I choose not to pay, I'm in no different position than I was in Option 1.

Giving your DNA to an online company is just plain fricking insane. When a user signs up they are agreeing under their terms of service to allow said company to sell, use and disseminate your dna however they see fit including LEO.

Sweet. Thanks for the link. I just bought four random DNA profiles.

So the data is online for free to view?

Only for people that sign up and pay for the service and send in their DNA

I’ve given my dna to much shadier chicks
Now China, Russia, the dark web, and a bunch of Reddit nerds know if any of those shady chicks produced your offspring.

Hackers were able to breach those accounts because the customers had used the same username and password on 23andMe as they had on other websites that had been previously compromised.
frick, people are lazy.

Or seek you out as an unplanned organ donor.
Good luck.

I don't consider either of those to be reasonable worst case scenarios. To paraphrase a friend of mine who does SysSec consulting for small businesses: if your risk assessment attempts to account for hostile nation-states, you're gonna have a bad time.

Are we mad at 23and Me because individuals used the same password on other sites that were hacked? It’s not like 23andMe was compromised.

Oh no.
Chinese are going to find out I can smell asparagus in my urine and that I have 3rd cousins in Louisiana who look like they were just thawed from a block of ice.
Guess I’ll be blamed for Hillary’s next murder rampage when a DNA printout appears on the crime scene.

If your fricking DNA, the better question would be what couldn’t they do with it?
