I'm thinking about giving a family member this for Christmas. For those of you that have used it, what are your thoughts on the service? Would you recommend it?

Seems cool, i've thought about doing it for myself. Would be a unique gift

I did it and found out I had downs, and was also .10 black, wife then left me...it was interesting but could turn into a shitty gift

Do you get to spend a day with Michael Jordan?

I got it done and then I got it for my dad last Christmas. It really is fascinating to see how much human DNA can morph in just one generation.

Great way to find out how much sub saharan African you have in you. Hint: it's more than you think.

Maybe the DNA didn't change. Maybe your mom just got railed by the pool boy and got preggo with you

People can eat a big bag of dicks just for their radio commercial alone.

How much does this cost? My FIL would love this.

I'm pretty sure that for most of you idiots, "23 and a half and me" is far more accurate.

now that we handed over the internet to those UN commie bastards, there's pretty much nowhere a regular guy can go to make really distasteful down syndrome jokes anymore.

Advise against it. Way too much personal information required that will be out there to compromise your family member at a later date. Are you keeping an eye on the direction our country is going? Don't do it.

Haven't done 23andMe, but I've done AncestryDNA. It's pretty neat.
Both 23andMe and AncestryDNA give you your DNA as a downloadable file, which you can upload to Promethease for $5 and get a report on genetic predispositions to certain diseases and traits. It gives you a LOT of data that you can go through, but it's pretty neat looking through it.
A few things about me that Promethease said about me that was spot on is that 1) I would be a picky eater early in life, but my tastes would change later on and I'd widen up, which is true and 2) I am much less likely to be a tobacco addict, which has also been true--I've smoked a half a pack to a pack a day for months on end, then would quit cold turkey for a few years, start up again, then quit, etc. with no problem and little-to-no withdrawals.

If your family lives in Alabama, 23 and Me will refuse to delve into the disturbing portions where your family tree doesn't fork.

I almost did it until I read the fine print that said they own your DNA afterwards and will release it if subpoenaed. I don't know why, but that freaked me out a little so I didn't do it.
