well they need to toss these 2 under the jail to remind the criminals to solve their grievances away from the tourist areas.
we should just build a plank off of the GNO, walk them off the edge.
Save jail time and send a message.

What's the "cost" of this sort of publicity regarding the Quarter?
We were talking about stop and frisk. If people decide it is worth it so be it but I think you will be sorry in the long haul. People already hate cops because of the laws, that they don't write, that they are required to enforce. How will people feel about the so called "military police state" when they are forced to be frisked every time the go to the Quarter? If it works in the Quarter I promise you it will be expanded to other areas of the city as well.

I didn't understand that as being the only thing referenced with regard to beefing up police presence in the Quarter.

I am all for beefing up police presence there but NOPD does not have the officers. The public has no idea how fast officers are leaving that place because the city wants it kept quiet, for obvious reasons. I have never seen an exodus from a department on the scale that it is seen now. Every department in the metro area has at least 30 NOPD officers trying to get on every week. It is crazy.

They aren't paid enough IMO. Kenner police make more for an easier job.
Should be better paid to do that will takes more money, but people hate taxes.

why are they leaving?
What can the city do to attract more qualified officers and keep the ones they have?

are they getting on? If they cant even get on other departments in the metro, then we dont want them in NOLA anyways.

More cops won't do much, IMO. These guys don't give a frick

On every story I've seen about the NOPD, you pretty much only have to barely read between the lines to figure this out.
I agree, for whatever reason, they're not outright reporting it, but they're clearly doing plenty to hint about it, so that even a casual observer can figure it out.
I agree, it's quite troubling as well.

NOLA may be the easiest to get onto. JPSO and Kenner are harder and Harahan is the buddy system as is Gretna and Westwego.

I don't believe pay will help. the residency requirement, which was only suspended by the council and not removed, has sent the wrong message to many officers and applicants. They know that it can be pulled at any minute and most don't want to be told where to live. The detail policy is now awful and greatly reduced the income of every officer. there are other internal issues and problems but it is not a place most want to work. I believe that education requirements are important when hiring cops but NOPD cannot seem to find people with the 60 hours of college credits required. the pay would have to go up tremendously, in my opinion, to stop attrition and help in hiring.

i think i saw an article about their hiring being racist for discriminating against blacks due to requirements on criminal history, also

That sounds like a horrible idea to me.
and honestly, i'd agree with you other than this instance.
NYC had to do it to clean up times square. and NOLA should do it to clean up the quarter.
if tourism dries up in NOLA, it'll be detroit part 2

In addition to the things I mentioned in my other post there is a feeling, and a reality, expressed by most officers that the department cannot wait to use them as scapegoats and throw them under the bus in order to stay in the good graces of the Dept of Justice. I realize this doesn't sound like much to non cops but a civilian review board, the Federal consent decree, and a department that views them as expendable does not make for a happy work environment. Cops have a tough job, especially in New Orleans, and nobody wants to do this job in a place like that.

Did things like Danziger and Wendell Allen hurt NOPD morale any or is it mostly the financial issues you mentioned?
Whoa you answered before I even asked

Stop and frisk is a extremely scary policy, not because of the stereotyping but giving cops that much power.

The cops can't do nothing to prevent these thugs from shooting one another.
