yeah I don't know if stop and frisk is the right answer or not. clearly it's infringement on the rights of the people. SOMETHING has to change for the french quarter though.
if people don't feel safe hanging out in the quarter, revenue will dry up and the city will have a MAJOR problem on their hands. keeping the quarter safe should be priority #1 for the mayor.

I have said it before on the OT (and I think I mentioned it back on page 3 in this very thread) but back in the late 80's, there was at least two uniformed officers a block plus plainclothes officers on Bourbon. They didn't allow people who weren't tourists or frequenting bars to hang around. They didn't allow groups to gather and stand still, they beat the crap out of anyone who got in a fight and generally whipped up on a few bystanders as well. Anyone coming near a police horse got a boot to the head. And I can't remember a single shooting or violent crime on or near Bourbon at that time. But they don't have enough officers for that anymore (I think the press release said there were 30 something officers on in 8th District that night for the entire District) and no one wants their rights violated like that anymore either. So we have what we have today.

Start stopping & frisking young black men on bourbon.
People would cry racism, but this would quickly and very simply solve the problem, end of story.
The guys that want / need to carry guns wouldnt go there anymore.

I'm sure most won't agree but I'm fine with losing some of my rights if it means keeping the greater community safer. I don't have anything to worry about. I want the criminals to worry. Right now, they don't worry about shite. I don't think it would spiral out of control to where our rights would then get violated every which way but what do I know.

Does the New Orleans and or NOPD allow police officers to take 2nd jobs as security for businesses i.e. secruity job at a Club at night? Not saying this will prevent issues from happening but if clubs had armed police presence at the door of clubs and bars, this could help cut down on stuff happening.

And they definitely can't argue NYC's numbers since their new Mayor eliminated stop and frisk.
NYC sees 33% spike in murders

Not to my knowledge. That is the way the old detail program worked but it has been done away with now.

Whatever. My level of caring has dropped a lot in the last couple years. I avoid the quarter at pretty much all costs, especially after dark.
The ghost of Harry Lee needs to come back and clean up this crap.

;(
The quarter is a gem in the city and I agree the crime has to be curtailed but not at the cost of "stop and frisk"

In Houston HPD officers or for that matter any police officer is allowed to take 2nd jobs doing security at Clubs or Bars or for that matter any business they can pay them. I mean I know of some officers that make more doing side jobs than actual police pay. $40 hour to provide real security for a bar. Win for the business and win for the officer.

from an articles comments from NYC people:
stop and frisk has ended in NYC and crime is up 33%
quote:
I lived in NYC for 2 years before the stop and frisk approach was adopted and for 5 more after. I can say that anyone in NYC will confirm that when stop and frisk was adopted the gun crimes dropped down to lows that were almost unbelievable.
Sections of the city that were rarely visited by anyone because of crime suddenly were safe to walk in. It ushered in a time of growth and rebuilding of neighborhoods that made the entire city turn around from a crime standpoint.
The issues of being tough on some liberties were true but the outcome of crime dropping drastically were undeniable and it changed the city in an incredibly positive way. Stop and frisk is the answer here, it takes a mayor and a police chief that are brave and focused with unflinching resolve to wipe out these crimes.
I don't think the current pair can handle it. It's tough and I don't think they have the ability to lead in this way. The people of the city need to get behind this and push for it. Enough is enough.
quote:
Yes, I was in NYC around that time too. The difference that Giuliani's approach made was like NIGHT and DAY. It changed New York's trajectory and changed its future.
Landrieu can make the same thing happen in Nola. He just has to have the political courage and the right police chief to do it--and they must also correct the negative effects of the new restrictions on work by off-duty uniformed police.
stop and frisk has ended in NYC and crime is up 33%

Nopd cracked down on several ghetto bars. Plus Katrina wiped some away. Now more riff raff hangs in the quarter. Sometimes it seems you can't win.
