2 stage A/C (worth the extra money?)

So, I am in the process of taking bids to replace my A/C unit in my house. The current one is 19 years old, and is on its last leg. The old unit is a single stage with a heat pump. It probably has a SEER rating of about an 8, maybe. Currently, we have no trouble getting the house cold even in summer with the old system. We have solar so i don't need to save money with a 2 stage or a high SEER rating.

My question is: is the 2 stage worth the extra 2k in terms of comfort?

I may be wrong but it seems like the benefits of it are minimal unless you have foam insulation because they already have less humidity in them due to being air tight.

The slower speed still cools but it takes it longer to get to the desired temp. Running slow for a long time is how you get excellent humidity control when you don't need max cooling, like at night.

That's my problem there. My house is a refrigerator at night without any trouble of getting there. I put the thermostat up to 77 during the summer in the day time. It usually never cuts on, because the house stays cold. We have a lot of insulation. I just don't think in my situation that its worth it, but everyone who has come over doesn't believe that our house keeps cold like I am describing.

the unit will run on low to remove humidity from the air even if the temp is within parameters. The unit also uses exterior temps to determine if it can cool at the low speed or if the high speed is needed to cool the house. I have been very please with mine. I have spray foam in the entire home.

Your 2 stage units will need replacing before you realize the cost savings in your energy bill, especially since you have solar.

For 2 stage in getting quoted 9-11k
That's 4 ton 16 SEER

1 stage 14 SEER 4 ton
8k but with some duct work
6-7K without

That's in Lafayette area
Butcher, Lee's, Menard's,

Both Butcher and Lee's said I don't need 2 cycle. my house is already very comfortable with my old system.

A great middle of the road solution is a variable speed air handler with a single speed compressor.

The air handler ramps up with a low speed profile to increase dehumidification but can go full speed at peak load (if it doesn't teach setpoint in 7 minutes).

In the winter it runs at 80% so it doesn't cook you in our south la climate.

This is roughly a $1k upgrade and it works great.

My house does great in shoulder seasons and can also handle the load in the peak of summer. It works much better than the 10 seer single speed system I had before.

A dry 74 is much different than a wet 74.

If you're comfortable at 77 in the summer, I wouldn't spend the extra.

The humidity is the issue, but it looks like you're ok with that.
