The comments contain many far from uplifting stories

quote:

I know exactly how this man feels! I turned 65 years old today and not one person, absolutely none, wished me a Happy Birthday. No family, no friends, no job, poor as a mouse, nothing to be proud of. Only memories of better times, but that makes life even harder. Every day I wake up I ask God why? Why am I still here? Sometimes I think I can't go on living like this, not for just 1 more day. I'm so tired of all the loss, the hurt, the pain, the fighting against windmills, the carrying on - what for? James, I feel you. You are not alone!

quote:

I am literally this guy. I feel like no one has done less with more than I have. No money no kids no friends no home. I'm 60 and I'm burdened with the regret of all the missed opportunities and knowing time is running out. Physically I now take good care of myself and have my interests but I still can't find what value I bring to the world. To James I say, your honesty, demeanor and style are beautiful, keep fighting.

quote:

I had an argument with my father about ten years ago. He doesn't drink, I do and everything else with it. I was living at home, came back from the pub and he was in the kitchen waiting for me, and boy did he leave me have it. Told me exactly what he thought about how I carried myself, how I made my money at the time, how I was wasting my life etc. My mother was there, scared that it would go to blows. But I let him speak, listened to what he had to say, accepted some of it, countered some of it but overall told him not to doubt me, that I'd get there in spite of being far from perfect. He cried and hugged me. I'm since sober, back in legit work, a homeowner, etc.

I told that story to a friend of mine one night and he didn't cry but went quiet and said he never had any moment of love and care like I had that night, even my father giving me a bollocking was out of care, and the hug was a genuine moment between father and son. He said his dad walked out when he was 8 and the rest of his childhood was written off.

I don't have any kids, but for anyone reading this who does - remember they need your care, your interest and your respect.

quote:

He's one of the lucky ones that actually got noticed, you can't blame him for opening up. I heavily relate to this man and I'm only 21.

quote:

I feel that man. The "almost made it" guy. The "you were so close, and yet so far" guy. Pennyless, friendless, lonely. And in my case well deserved so. I can't even blame my parents, quite the opposite in fact.
They gave me all the support and opportunities in this world and I failed. Sometimes you're unlucky, sometimes you're stupid. I've been the latter.
For me it's too late, but if a young man is reading this, don't do what I did, ok?
Make the most of your chances in life, even if they're scarce. Don't be conformist. Don't go with the flow because it is the easy, efortless way. Plant your feet on the ground, roll up your sleeves and fight for your own stuff.
Don't become a burden for your relatives like I've become at 52.
In short, don't be me.
God bless.

The older I get, the more I realize how much luck plays into success.
I know plenty of complete dumbasses who are wealthier than most.

This is sad as hell. I'd rather read the comments on Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's classic One Sweet Day.

Money doesn’t always equal success

Edit: watched the video, there is nothing sad about that video. Guy is a narcissistic douche bag.

I didn't get the reference until I instinctively started singing the song in my head and actually listened to the lyrics for the first time in 20 years

It's a great song but also people use it as a sort of obituary board. When I came across that I decided to never read the comments of any remotely sad song ever again.

quote:

This guy was a living cadaver back then, he came out from nowhere, hiding needle scars and dead eyes, sat down, and sang the crap out of it with such control and sweetness in his voice. This moment was out of this world. Just magical

This is the closest anyone has ever gotten to singing at their own funeral.... RIP Layne

This guy seems pretty extreme though.

No friends at 60 seems insanely miserable.

No money on top of that is just incomprehensible.

I think many who commented, and the subject of the video himself, are looking at life the wrong way.

Yes, we must be self-reliant, but if you look at the great teachers of humanity in history, they emphasized different things.

How and to what degree have you helped others in the spirit of brotherhood?

Have you worked to overcome the egoist tendancies that hold us back from reunion with the divine?

Looking at things that way changes things - can't take it with you...

Just my $0.02.

Family, friends, cultural practices, spirituality.

That’s what makes a life. Not economic productivity, traveling, revelry, and debauchery. Those things may ADD to a life. But in the end, only those things will feel empty.

I am sorry for those in the comments who cannot find value in their existence. For many, it’s out of their control or bad lucky. For some, they did it to themselves with their character and life choices.

But he will go down as a “greatest” which is more than most can say.

There is an epidemic of loneliness that is disproportionately affecting men and to a degree there is a self fulfilling nature to it. We can be miserable but also too stubborn to fricking do anything about it

I actually saw the latest episode of AOM was disputing the loneliness epidemic, but I don't know if it's a real dispute or like a spin on the concept.

Because God always has a purpose for us.

Because it's not about us, it's about him.

If one wishes to serve God, that is purpose enough, to loyally serve the creator of the universe.

No age, no situation is "too late"

The thief on the cross was not "too late" to serve His purpose.

Because history is HIStory

You realize how ridiculous this sounds, right?

I mean it when I say, when you have God in your heart, you just can't fathom feeling lonely.
