Is catching this stolen car suspect worth these two people’s lives?
The flip side of this argument is if I'm a criminal and want to steal cars, all I have to do is make sure the cops have to put some people's lives in danger to catch me and I can get away clean.
At some point, you have to send a message to would be criminals: you can't use the fear of bystanders getting hurt as a get out of jail free card.

Strongly disagree. The message you want to send is that insured and replaceable possessions are more important than innocent human lives. If the criminal isn't endangering lives, why do you want the police to do it? That's completely counter to the generic and ubiquitous police motto.

He hasn't bailed out of jail yet. His girlfriend tried calling a bail bondsman (I hate to keep saying "someone I know", but one bail bondsman she called, they pretty pretty much told her "you don't have enough to get him out.. bye" and hung up on her.. His bond is 100K so if he can't bond out of that, he is pretty much fricked because he will not be able to afford his own lawyer).
This is bs. Lots of bondsmans do payment plans, especially if you can put a significant amount down.
100k is a pretty ridiculous amount, considering what Baton Rouge judges give thugs willfully murdering people. He may have screwed up, but it was in performance of his job and he had no intention of killing these two girls.

The police officer and his respective agency probably will be held civilly liable, and the theif should be held criminally liable.
This report interviews Tony Clayton. He said both parties are responsible, but it seems like the police's dash cam and the cam on him is pretty revealing the state of mind the cop was in.
Going by what Clayton said, I think there is a good chance the Addis police officer would take a plea.

The bottom line, there really was no need to chase the dumbass.
If I had to guess as to what happened, the boy's daddy probably had enough of his shite and figured he was going to teach him a lesson by calling the police. After all he did take a car not registered to him after the owner of the vehicle told him he couldn't use it. It wasn't a car jacking situation.
I am 98% sure he was going to return home later that day. He didn't start running from the cops until they started chasing him.
Like I mentioned earlier, his family is from White Castle, when he was being chased he was going in directions he knew. He took the Plaquemine exit off the bridge..
I mentioned before that one time years ago, I was at my brother's house, who lives off of HWY1. There was a police chase involving a motorcycle. It started in Port Allen. By the time they were on on HWY heading south on the outskirts of Plaquemine the following departments were chasing this one person.
WBR Parish Deputies
City of Port Allen
City of Brusly
City of Addis
Iberville Parish Deputies
City of Plaquemine
Six different departments most having multiple cars in the chase. If I recall it was 12 cars in a single file line flying down HWY 1.
White Castle City police had joined in Ascension Parish and Donaldsonville City. The dude driving the motorcycle, hit the levee in Donaldsonville, he went back down from the levee and took off in a field. He got away.
I know its easy to monday morning QB, but if you just google "police chase crashes" there are a lot of stories from all over. And it seems like the problem can be fixed with better communication.

Grand Jury Indicts Officer
Fleeing Driver Also Indicted
quote:
A grand jury charged an Addis police officer with manslaughter and malfeasance after a high-speed chase that left two teenage girls dead.
quote:
Cauthron additionally faces charges of aggravated obstruction of a highway, negligent injuring and reckless operation. Prosecutors said the malfeasance charge was based on him "conducting his duty in an unlawful manner."
Fleeing Driver Also Indicted
quote:
The grand jury also indicted Tyquel Zanders, 24, of Baton Rouge, on two counts of manslaughter, one count of aggravated obstruction of a highway, one count of negligent injury, and one count of reckless operation of a vehicle. He is the man authorities said was fleeing officers at the time of the crash.
