CF Industries partnering with South Korea firm on $2 billion ‘blue’ ammonia project in Ascension

CF Industries is partnering with LOTTE Chemical Corp. to potentially co-develop “blue” ammonia at a previously announced $2 billion project in Ascension Parish and ship it to South Korea.

The two sides have signed a memorandum of understanding to assess whether they should develop a “blue” ammonia production facility in the U.S., likely in Ascension Parish. The ammonia developed through this venture would head to the South Korea market, where LOTTE Chemical is headquartered.

CF Industries has already signed a deal with Mitsui & Co. of Japan to develop the $2 billion “Blue Point” facility. Federal filings show CF Industries bought land for the project on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish in the third quarter of 2022.

CF Industries has begun a front-end engineering and design, or FEED, study for the project, and it expects to make a final investment decision on the project in the second half of 2023 with a roughly four-year construction timeline, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Jobs are great. You get insurance so you can pay for your kid's cancer treatment.

2 things:

CF underwent a 2 billion project in the last 10 years to build a new ammonia / urea / etc. plant in Donaldsonville. They are obviously making money hand over fist.

I'm kinda surprised they had to buy land for this new project. I figured they already owned a bunch of buffer property around their complex.

They will probably employ 5 full time employees at the heavily automated plant and give CF massive ITEP property tax breaks. Meanwhile, Donaldsonville remains a shithole which is unfortunate because it does have potential.

so nothing is actually coming to Ascension. They've just decided to consider it?

It's got some cool small town architecture. Could be some sort of an antique, coffee shop, micro-brew vibe. But this is WAY down the road.
