Where is that building located? I think I might have worked in it.

After posting I gave it some thought, and it could be referring to a couple places. One on ambassador, near the bridge, the other (nicer) one off of kaliste saloom near the thruway. I was talking about the ambassador one.

He did. A countach and a Diablo (white and black I think).

He has a blue Huracan now, although his plane collection has always been much more impressive than the cars (or so I’m told, I don’t know much about planes)

Don’t know if he still has one but he was into fancy cars

yes he did, a white one still does have a black lambo I think

they used to take it out to paul fournet and race it on the taxi ways

he has several antique planes, crashed one of them years ago and walked away

moved there in 82 right out of college with a pete degree and geology degree...eng for major oil...

real estate was high with interest rates in mid teens.?????..us young guys bought over priced crud..older local guys sold their crud to guys with new money and wanting to be townies and then took that money to move/build into a nice area....lunch with service company reps every day...lots of cocktail lunches..la fonda was full off company cars every day...

locals did not like us out of town guys...new money guys similar to bayou billionaires show from shreveport... put in my two years in the field office and moved to the corp office in nola...never looked back and was very glad to be out...

I dunno if it’s cookie cutter....it’s certainly a cesspool of bad taste and ostentatiousness.

I grew up here and moved back a couple of years ago and I have a love hate relationship with the oilfield. It's given my family a lot of opportunities but also let us down. One thing I won't miss are the arrogant oilfield pricks (who I know are the minority). The types that would make fun of you for going to university (a lot of those guys are working construction or driving a truck now for less than $20/hr). The price crash really humbled a lot those dudes.

Weird question. For me personally, when I travel to Laffy for Biz, I normally don’t desire Mexican cause we have such an over abundance in the SBC but obviously locals do. Majority of locals rave about LaFonda, which is about the equivalent of our Superior Grill, but not as good. And I don’t really consider Superior to be great Mexican, especially in SHV.

worked for a company in Laffy who had built their main office building during the oil boom. It had a big arse atrium in the center with fountains and plants. really extravagant. they were leasing it to another company and had us in a small lab building next door to it.

Must be Frank's. Built that big nice building and didnt even move into it because of the bubble bursting

The thing that is both a positive and negative about the region and the industry.

Where else can a guy who isn't close to college material go to work out of high school and within a couple years be making close to, or making, 6 figures of income per year and able to support a family where he can send his kids to Catholic school, live in a nice home, and his wife does not have to work? She can be available for the young kids.

I know people in the "academia world" and others (some I'm actually friends with, to an extent) who despise and have animosity towards such guys because they honestly feel slighted that they are making less after four to six years of high education.

At the same time, those same out of high school oilfield workers far too often aren't disciplined enough to save. Unfortunately (obviously to a lesser extent because they aren't making millions), some of those workers have family members whom they feel obligated to help, but then get taken advantage of. Some end up with girlfriends/wives who grew up blue collar/rural lower class economically like them, who want to spend that money as soon as it hits the bank.

Then when things crash, they crash hard.

Again, having the oil & gas industry in South Louisiana (even if now you have to get your work offshore or out in West TX/New Mexico) is a blessing because the region has many guys and families who are good with welding, mechanical trades, etc. who can do very well in the oilfield vs. many of their peers from other regions. But it definitely has its challenging times as well.

I am convinced this sentiment has more to do with the OFT stereotype than any real experience that people have. I won’t say it doesn’t exist (although I don’t know anyone like that) but big time jealousy from people with higher education not making 1/2 as much as some baw operator is definitelty something I’ve seen first hand.

Can't have a thread that says nice things about a city in Louisiana without some New Orleans homers shitting all over it.
