What can’t? Single income living in a modest home in Acadiana (obviously not off East or West Bayou Parkway) and sending your two kids to the local Catholic school?

Yes it can. It can be done in the $80k a year range.

Also in the 2000-2010s as well.

Correct, live in Abbeville and send your kids to Mt. Carmel. Easily done on $100k.

Yup.

That baw operator learned a trade. Look at plumbers and electricians these days in places like Lafayette and the burbs. Only reason there’s not the open obvious whining of jealousy from the “more educated” crowd is they need those people to service their homes.

They need the chemical plants and oilfield products too, they’ve just got their heads too far up their asses to realize it.

Man I miss LaFonduh. Went there for the to go margaritas. Of course this really wasn’t a thing but we could convince one of the bartenders to fix a pitcher and put it in a styrofoam container. Back to the office on La Rue France and we were set.

I think 100k household income to live in Lafayette and send 2 kids to private school would be cutting it pretty thin.

100k is $8333 /month. After taxes/401k/insurance/etc. call it $6k.

Some very rough numbers for a modest lifestyle with private school:

Mortgage = $1200
1 Car = $500
Car Ins = $150
School for 2 = $1500
Bills = $600
Food + Groceries = $1000

we're at $4950, so you've got $1050 left to save or for literally anything other than the basics.

I guess you technically could make it work, but it would be tight.

Seems like a very low mortgage payment for someone paying private school tuition unless they put down a huge down payment.

I’d say more in the $1600-1800 range.

People in the middle class generally live tight. This board is fantasy land.

People on this board are more interested in perception than reality. If you accept your situation and realize you are not going to live in River Ranch it can be done.

fyi...in 80s in laffy...

two bedroom pos patio home (12-1400) sq foot would run 75-85 k.....

interest rates 13-15 percent ( most people knowing they would be moved within two years by company took arm loans ( started in 9ish with upside to teens after a few years)

managers and rich locals had the real houses...

the bust left a lot of stuff i imagine got torn down or turned to ????

also a lot of people from the north came down for the pay and were there for the moment...they always complained about the weather and culture so in fairness i understand the locals dislike...

i worked with a lot of ivy school eng...fun fact a pete from lsu started at 30k...a cheme from ivy at 29k a mechanical from ivy at 28.5....
and a mechanical from usl 29k....there were not many true pete schools and you had to pay more for the usl grad than the ivy because he knew the market...when the ivy guys would get cocky we would run economics for them with return on your investment (tuition)

How did Lafayette become the offshore hub back then? Why not New Orleans

Lots of reasons I'm sure, but three jump to the top of my mind:

Schools, corruption, quality of life

I agree. Frankly if your household income is $100k I would think it would be better to spend that money on a house in the nicest school district you can and send the kids to public school instead of shelling out for private school.

Weird question. For me personally, when I travel to Laffy for Biz, I normally don’t desire Mexican cause we have such an over abundance in the SBC but obviously locals do. Majority of locals rave about LaFonda, which is about the equivalent of our Superior Grill, but not as good. And I don’t really consider Superior to be great Mexican, especially in SHV.
I don't think I've ever eaten Mexican food at La Fonda (outside of chips and salsa/beans), and we go there several times a year.

If you think the numbers I threw out reflect River Ranch expenses then I've got a bridge to sell you.

That outlay was for a ~$250k-ish home and a single car for a family of 4.

You don't need a $250k home to be happy.
