You know no one has mentioned the KKK in all of this. This is a small Southern town, if her boyfriend was black I could see this being a real issue for the KKK.

What does removing a battery from a cell phone do? It would only make sense to remove the battery pre-assault so she couldn't call the cops. Whether it was a stranger or not is irrelevant. No data is contained within the battery.
