FEMA rules may require more than 1,800 East Baton Rouge Parish homeowners to elevate their homes or sell them to the government for demolition because of the 2016 floods — but Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome isn't identifying who they are yet.

The city-parish was preparing to send out letters informing the residents of their situation, but Broome said on April 30 that those letters were on hold. That announcement came days after Livingston Parish leaders told 1,221 residents about the same problem, drawing an outcry from shocked homeowners.

“We need another weeklong study, with catered meetings of course, to figure out how to get more 10 cent envelopes. The study will cost 1.5 million dollars.”

Not including the $45/hr the folks are paid to put them together at 2 envelopes per hour.

I hate to say this but my Gf (now wife (No pics)) was living in Denham Springs during the 2016 flood and her house got 5.5' of water.

Before we started rebuild/renovating we looked at the FEMA site and it specifically told people if you got over 50% damage and your house elevation is under the 100 year flood plane then you will have to raise your house to rebuild!

50% Rule

We raised the house with the money FEMA was giving at the time and only cost her about 5k.

Well worth it after selling it in 2018!

People and local governments knew of this rule but decided to ignore it, now it's coming back to bite them..

I wonder if this has the potential to happen down Burbank.

Probably not, but I worry about some of the folks in Woodland Ridge.

The fact that they're going on record and admitting it is what REALLY sums it up

Any otherwise incompetent group would be too ashamed to admit that

How does a government office only have 100 envelopes and no access to more? Idiotic

We making rules for a once in 500 years disaster event now? Seems unreasonable

Somebody couldn’t have run to Office Depot and just bought a package of letters? How much would that have cost?

FEMA rule only effect those in the 100 year flood zone (Zone AE or lower) and the 16 floor did 50% or more damage to the house.

Parish can waive the rule, but if they do, then FEMA flood rates within said parish will go up for all who purchase flood insurance. ALL, even those who did not flood in 16 but are required to purchase flood insurance. Think of it as the insurance risk rating changing.
